Presentazione dell’installazione temporanea Radura della Memoria all’interno del progetto Il Parco del Polcevera e il Cerchio Rosso: Luca Vitone con Studio Stefano Boeri Architetti, Metrogramma Milano e Inside Outside | Petra Blaisse.

Comunicato stampa

“Each plant has its own personality, it enchants and wanders, it cheers up and disturbs, depending on the form, colors, light that shines. Each person can be identified with a tree for the behavior, body, ideal; but no one can ever be the owner of it. They can just have the will of being a tree” was writing Luca Vitone in 2009 about his artwork Vuole Canti, 18 images of trees, photographed in the city of Trento, where the exhibition was organized at Civica Galleria. The trees got transformed in the personification of 18 fellow artists, who started to work, someone earlier someone later, in the Eighties as Vitone.
In that same text written for Vuole Canti Vitone went on stating that to be in a wood is similar to being in a pinacoteque, and trees can tell, with their wordy silence, the passing of time with the same strength of a painting, as if men and trees weren’t so different: “Each root, vain of the trunk, branch, leaf are particulars that become metaphors, symbols for our living”.
For the Park of the Bridge where Luca Vitone was called to collaborate by Studio Stefano Boeri Architetti, it is not casual at all that the artist, who has always worked on the place as protected reserve of living and collective and individual memory, intended to realize a wood, dedicated to the people who lost their lives during the tragedy of the collapse of Morandi bridge.
A wood, the one of Radura della Memoria (Clearing of Memory), composed by different species, biodiversity that Vitone intended to refer to the necessity of giving back to those people united from destiny that made them victims, a peculiar personality, beyond any connotation of any accidental nature. The attribution to the tree in this sense will be a slow and rational process, that will happen as soon as the tree will be put inside the ground. In this first phase of presentation, with a collaborative origin between all the figures that Studio Boeri involved in the project. Petra Blaisse from Inside Outside in Amsterdam realized the big wooden platform of 50 cm diameter; the young trees are going to be in vases and placed in a double concentric circle, forming a clearing to receive light of the days and dark of the nights, as in an arcane, magic place where mystery of life and death exposed.
In that anthropomorphized wood there will be, chosen together with the agronomist of the team Laura Gatti: the chestnut tree, the strawberry tree, the hazelnut tree and the ash, the olive tree and the walnut tree, the cherry-tree and the tilia, the apple tree and the beech tree, apricot tree and the bitter orange tree, the nectar of which is slightly aphrodisiac and protects the sleep from the nightmares.
An amphitheater where time has been forged with nature to protect memory and biodiversity of each specie, but also with the peculiarity of each person and especially those women and men and kids that before being transformed into victims from the tragedy, have laughed and cried, have loved and have been loved and loved will remain forever.
An artwork, then, focused on etos of conservation of the living and life through the capacity of trees and wood to re-green and renew every instant.
In the Mediterranean area too, after all, the first sacred place in the history of humanity was the wood, in Latin lucus, plural of lights. Temples and churches arrived later, when polytheism and, finally, monotheism substituted animism. The towered columns of the temples and churches and the light that filters, subtle and transparent, recall the clearing of the sacred wood that people of ecosystem, differently from the one of the biosphere, protected and venerated as inviolable. In the frames of that woods it was forbitten to tear down the trees, to pick up the branches and to hunt the wild animals. They were reserves to preserve the ecosystem from the excessive exploitation. It seems the 30% of the territory and the water resources were protected and inviolable until the sacred wood could exist. In the ancient sacred wood of Spoleto there was a memorial stone that contained the lex luci from Spoleto, that dates back to IV Century b.C, first example of a forestry norm validated from holiness.
The worship of the trees was so common in Europe that in IV Century a.C. led the Roman emperor Teodosio II to destroy all the sacred wood of the Celts and Romans and to ban any elusive and primitive worship regarding the trees.
The dialogue between men of the ecosystem and trees gets lost in the night of times and continues even when there’s just wood left form the tree.
The wood of the Park that Luca Vitone, in this moment of deep ecological crisis, caused by the commercial exploitation of natural resources, dedicated to the victim of the bridge, with the wish that it will be transformed in a reserve managed by the community, outside the literary topoi and the ambientalist myths of bio-capitalism, of bio-politics and bioethics that tend to de-anthropisation and de-ruralize in the name of an archaic nature that has never existed, since the extended deforestations happened in the Seventies an Eighties in Italy, as the ones that happen today in the Amazon and Indonesia, were not operated by farmer but by middle-class speculators.
A political artwork, the wood by Vitone, realized so that in one of the many possible futures someone can see the tamed young trees of today, transformed by the time in ancient and magnificent creatures, telling also in that space-time that the myth of untouched nature is a colonial and neo-colonial myth and something that doesn’t exist because a natural dimension detached from economy and politics doesn’t exist.
Topos on which is founded the society of the biosphere to exploit collective goods and transform every natural or social resource from a communitarian system of control to privatization, creating many victims along the way.
A contemporary artwork, the wood of Vitone, dense of symbols and meanings, Frazer in the The Golden Bough: A Study in Comparative Religion said: “Sometimes we believe that dead souls give life to trees”.
A monument, we don’t know if rhetoric or anti-rhetoric, to the ones that we cannot see as victims on a fatal incident, but that died in an avoidable massacre.
