From 23 February to 30 July 2023, Pirelli HangarBicocca presents "NOw/here," the solo exhibition of Gian Maria Tosatti (Rome, 1980; lives and works in Naples), one of the most interesting Italian artists in recent years, who represented Italy at the 59. Venice Biennale in 2022. With an unprecedented intervention in the Shed space, Tosatti will offer viewers a chance to experience aspects of his practice that have never been introduced before.

The exhibition "NOw/here," curated by Vicente Todolí, consists of two series of works presented for the first time at Pirelli HangarBicocca. Although Tosatti deliberately developed the exhibition to answer the call for a retrospective project, he has conceived the show in a highly specific way, by creating new works which epitomize the feelings that have influenced his research over the past two decades. The body of work is built around large-scale elements that embody a dialogue with the Zeitgeist (Spirit of the time), and the sentiment of the generation to which the artist belongs. The pieces are conceived as "mirrors," open questions that directly confront the visitor.

"Right from the title, whose pronunciation differs depending on the perspective chosen by the reader, the exhibition is an invitation to delve into an environment that seems to pose an open, simple, intimate question to those who cross its threshold: ‘how do you feel?’" the artist comments. Indeed, the exhibition concept effectively crosses the limits of the environmental installation, while retaining a close connection with the architecture of Pirelli HangarBicocca and giving shape to a space of its own— that of vision, experience, and of an approach to art as transcendence.

Through this new body of works, Gian Maria Tosatti captures the essential aspects of the human condition at such a difficult moment in time, and of a society poised between catastrophe and evolution. An experience that visitors can undergo hic et nunc, and that unfolds without predetermination, free from any conditioning. The works reconnect with the very moment when reality reveals itself, as evoked by the exhibition title "NOw/here," whose elements can be read individually, as "now" and "here," or sequentially, as in "nowhere." This project is a coherent continuation of the artist's poetic journey, showing extensive references to many of his past works, from Testamento – devozioni X (2011), to the more recent Episode of Odessa (2020) and History of Night and Destiny of Comets (2022). In "NOw/here" Tosatti seems to confront History, interpreting it not as a chain of events, but as a feeling, while trying to capture the moment to which we belong.

Dal 23 febbraio al 30 luglio 2023 Pirelli HangarBicocca presenta “NOw/here”, la mostra personale di Gian Maria Tosatti (Roma, 1980; vive e lavora a Napoli), uno degli artisti italiani più interessanti degli ultimi anni, che nel 2022 ha rappresentato l’Italia alla 59. Biennale di Venezia. Con un inedito intervento nello spazio dello Shed, Tosatti offrirà allo spettatore la possibilità di confrontarsi con una dimensione mai presentata prima della sua pratica.

La mostra “NOw/here”, a cura di Vicente Todolí, si compone di due cicli di opere presentate per la prima volta in Pirelli HangarBicocca. Rispondendo alla richiesta di un progetto retrospettivo, Gian Maria Tosatti ha, tuttavia, elaborato la mostra in modo molto particolare, lavorando su nuove opere che fossero la sintesi dei sentimenti che hanno animato la sua ricerca negli ultimi vent’anni. Il corpus di lavori si sviluppa attorno a elementi di grande formato, che rappresentano un dialogo con lo Zeitgeist (Spirito del tempo) e il sentimento della generazione cui l’artista appartiene. Le opere sono pensate come “specchi”, domande aperte che chiamano direttamente in causa il visitatore.

“A partire dal titolo, la cui pronuncia è possibile solo a seguito di una presa di posizione da parte di chi legge, la mostra è un invito a immergersi in un ambiente che sembra porre una domanda aperta, semplice, confidenziale a chi varca la soglia: «tu come ti senti?»”, commenta l’artista. La proposta espositiva attua infatti un superamento del limite dell’installazione ambientale pur mantenendo una stretta correlazione con l’architettura di Pirelli HangarBicocca, dando forma a uno spazio a sé stante, quello della visione, dell’esperienza e dell’accostamento all’arte come trascendenza.

Attraverso questo nuovo corpus di opere, Gian Maria Tosatti coglie gli aspetti più essenziali della condizione umana in un momento complesso come quello attuale, di una società in bilico tra catastrofe ed evoluzione. Un’esperienza che il visitatore può fruire hic et nunc e che si compie senza predeterminazione, scevra da condizionamenti. Le opere si riconnettono al momento stesso in cui la realtà si svela, così come evocato dal titolo della mostra “NOw/here” i cui termini possono avere valenza singola “now” (adesso) e “here” (qui), oppure consequenziale “nowhere” (nessun luogo). Questo progetto segue con continuità e coerenza il percorso poetico dell’artista, mostrandosi ricco di richiami a molte sue opere del passato da Testamento – devozioni X del 2011, alle più recenti Episodio di Odessa (2020) e Storia della notte e destino delle comete (2022). In “NOw/here” Tosatti sembra porsi di fronte alla Storia e interpretarla non come catena di eventi, ma come sentimento, cercando di ritrarne l’attimo in cui vi siamo coinvolti.
