Saranno i sali d’argento, saranno i soggetti fotografati, ma le foto di David Goldblatt mostrano una profondità che va al di là del semplice gioco di ombre. Occhi e volti che raccontano una storia, la storia, quella dell’Apartheid. David Goldblatt: Photographs 1948–2018 è la mostra che il Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) dedica al fotografo scomparso lo scorso giugno in cui sono raccolti più di 350 scatti che ripercorrono la sua carriera attraverso le serie fotografiche, nonché l’unica opera australiana di Goldblatt che esplora l’industria mineraria dell’amianto nella “città fantasma” di Wittenoom nell’Australia Occidentale. Nipote di migranti ebrei lituani, Goldblatt nacque a Randfontein nel 1930 e visse e lavorò a Johannesburg fino alla sua recente morte nel giugno 2018. La sua prima foto in bianco e nero risale al 1948, e continuò a usare esclusivamente i sali d’argento fino alla fine dell’apartheid nel 1994, quando decise che il mondo poteva essere mostrato a colori. Alcune delle serie presenti in mostra sono On the Mines , che mostrano le condizioni di lavoro nelle miniere; In Boksburg , che ritrae una comunità di bianchi che si circondano di privilegi quando attorno regna la povertà; Particulars , in cui il fotografo punta l’obiettivo sui dettagli del corpo umano; ed Ex-offenders , uno spaccato su criminalità e la violenza.
