The Belgian artist Willy De Sauter (1938, Bruges) has since the 1960’s been working on a consistent body of work that is articulated through the use of a fundamental formal language. His recent focus has turned to the realisation of monochrome chalk paintings and objects. The exhibition at Loom Gallery does not aim to present a retrospective overview of the work of the artist, but will rather explore a number of trajectories the artist has followed in the realisation of his most recent work.

As an artist, De Sauter feels an affinity with the architect who, like him, seeks to create order and structure. De Sauter continued his experiments with an architectural formal language in his works on wooden panels, worked with layers of chalk. The recent monochrome chalk works of Willy De Sauter are a continuation of his years of research into a fundamental approach to art. The simplicity and austerity of these work results from the relentless reductive process he pursues in order to reveal their essence. Nevertheless, these works are also the fruit of an intensive and artisanal creation process and require in this way the close involvement of the artist.

Despite their minimalist appearance, the chalk works can definitely be related to the Western painting tradition: the Flemish Primitives in fact already used a mixture of chalk and glue as a primer for their wooden panels. At first sight, these works appear to be nothing more than sterile white panels, but any one taking the time to explore these works more in depth will be seduced by their organic material appearance, the chalk stripes in the surface, the rich intensity of the white, the contrast between smooth and matte areas, their aspect continually changing with the play of daylight ... The variable sizes and thicknesses of the panels and the conscious presentation of the works, either horizontally on the floor or on tables or vertically on the wall, create a rhythmic play within the space.

Willy De Sauter invariably tries to rid the exhibition space of any visual noise that might divert the attention. An exhibition of Willy De Sauter thus becomes a space of serenity, which to some spectators even exudes a meditative quality. The visual tranquillity he creates throughout his oeuvre challenges the viewer to observe and experience the wealth of subtle visual stimuli in a quiet and concentrated manner. Willy De Sauter as an artist is not interested in the grand gesture but aims, through his work, to redefine the fundamentals of the experience of art in a radical way.

Willy De Sauter (1938, Bruges) dagli anni Sessanta lavora ad un corpus di opere che si articola fondamentalmente attraverso l’uso di un linguaggio formale. Il suo obiettivo è rivolto alla realizzazione di dipinti e oggetti monocromi in gesso. La mostra alla Loom Gallery non intende presentare una panoramica retrospettiva del lavoro dell’artista ma, piuttosto, esplorare una serie di traiettorie che l’artista ha seguito nella realizzazione del suo lavoro più recente.

Come artista, De Sauter sente un’affinità con la figura dell’architetto che, come lui, cerca di creare ordine e struttura. De Sauter ha continuato la sua sperimentazione con un linguaggio formale architettonico nelle sue opere realizzandole su pannelli di legno lavorati con stratificazioni di gesso. Le recenti opere in gesso monocromo di Willy De Sauter sono una continuazione dei suoi anni di ricerca su un approccio fondamentale all’arte. La semplicità e l’austerità di questi lavori è l’esito dell’inesorabile processo di riduzione che l’artista persegue per rivelare la loro essenza. Tuttavia, queste opere, sono anche il frutto di un sistema di creazione intensivo e artigianale che richiede in perciò lo stretto coinvolgimento dell’artista.

Nonostante il loro aspetto minimalista, le opere in possono ritenersi certamente legate alla tradizione pittorica occidentale: i primitivi fiamminghi infatti utilizzavano una miscela di gesso e colla come preparazione per i loro pannelli di legno. A prima vista, queste opere sembrano essere nient’altro che sterili pannelli monocromi ma chiunque si prenda il tempo per esplorarle più in profondità, sarà sedotto dal loro aspetto materiale organico; le strisce di gesso sulla superficie, la ricca intensità del bianco, il contrasto tra aree lisce e opache, il loro aspetto in continuo mutamento grazie al gioco della luce diurna. Le dimensioni e gli spessori variabili dei pannelli e la presentazione consapevole delle opere, sia in orizzontale sul pavimento che sui tavoli o, in verticale sulla parete, creano un gioco ritmico all’interno dello spazio.

Willy De Sauter cerca sempre di liberare lo spazio espositivo da qualsiasi rumore visivo che possa distogliere l’attenzione. Una mostra di Willy De Sauter diventa così uno spazio di serenità, che, ad alcuni spettatori. trasmette anche una qualità meditativa. La tranquillità visiva che crea durante la sua opera sfida lo spettatore a osservare e sperimentare la ricchezza di sottili stimoli della vista in modo silenzioso e concentrato. Willy De Sauter come artista non è interessato al grande gesto ma mira, attraverso il suo lavoro, a ridefinire, in modo radicale, i fondamenti dell’esperienza dell’arte.
