Veronica de Giovanelli – Du monde minéral

Boccanera Gallery presenta “Du monde minéral”, la mostra personale dell’artista trentina Veronica de Giovanelli. L’esposizione, che presenta le nuove opere dell’artista, sarà visitabile presso gli spazi di Boccanera Gallery a Milano dal 21 marzo al 5 maggio 2024.

Con i suoi lavori più recenti Veronica de Giovanelli vuole mettere in luce i processi che determinano, plasmano o distruggono i paesaggi minerali, come ad esempio la sedimentazione, l’erosione, la solidificazione e la cristallizzazione. Attraverso un processo creativo fatto di moltissime stratificazioni, l’artista crea immagini che evocano il mondo minerale, più che descriverlo.

“Sviluppo una particolare attenzione all’esplorazione intima del paesaggio minerale, in cui la necessità di rappresentazione lascia il posto ad altre esigenze, legate alle potenzialità proprie della pittura e del collage. Traduco la mia esperienza del paesaggio, creando immagini sospese, suggerite, talvolta mascherate o alterate, che invitano l’occhio a muoversi all’interno della tela.” - spiega de Giovanelli.
“La materia pittorica è sedimentata, a volte graffiata, raschiata, stampata o alterata da processi chimici casalinghi. Le trasparenze permettono di vedere cosa c’è sotto la superficie, rivelando il processo di realizzazione del dipinto. Il mio lavoro è il risultato di tentativi, ripensamenti e cancellazioni, di azione informale e lunga riflessione al tempo stesso, in una tensione processuale che alterna l’assecondare e il dominare la materia. Creo opere - dalla pittura al collage, dal frottage all’installazione - con l’obiettivo di rendere visibile ciò che del paesaggio viene percepito superficialmente o segretamente e di avvicinarmi al paesaggio nella sua totalità.” - così l’artista descrive il processo creativo dei suoi lavori.

Gli ultimi dipinti di Veronica de Giovanelli investono il paesaggio nella sua materialità e nella geologia dei suoi strati pittorici. In queste opere, infatti, l’artista ha sperimentato le possibilità intrinseche della pittura. L’artista inizia i suoi dipinti a terra, con la tela in orizzontale, sulla quale fa sedimentare diversi strati di pittura, ma recentemente ha “giocato” maggiormente con la materia ad esempio lasciando depositare pigmenti puri sulla tela, a volte mossi da spruzzi di trementina, in un personale processo alchemico. Inoltre, l’artista ha introdotto nel suo lavoro la tecnica della marmorizzazione e del frottage, combinando questi diversi elementi con la pittura e il collage, spesso utilizzando carte minerali o trasparenti. Ne risultano dei lavori nei quali la possibilità della veduta paesaggistica è sempre più lontana e lascia spazio alla materialità pittorica, ricondotta alla sua natura di terra, liquido e magma antico. I paesaggi minerali di Veronica de Giovanelli sono punteggiati da ampie campiture leggere alternate a una pittura densa, sovrapposta, cancellata e riscritta, nei quali l’artista tenta di reinterpretare e ribaltare i canoni tradizionali della pittura di paesaggio.

Boccanera Gallery presents “Du monde minéral”, the solo exhibition of the Trentino artist Veronica de Giovanelli. The exhibition, which presents the artist’s new works, will be open at the Boccanera Gallery in Milan from 21 March to 5 May 2024.

With her more recent works Veronica de Giovanelli wants to highlight the processes that determine, shape or destroy mineral landscapes, sedimentation, erosion, solidification, crystallization and so on. Through a creative process made of many layers, the artist creates images that evoke the mineral world, rather than describe it.

“I develop a particular attention to the intimate exploration of the mineral world, in which the need for representation allows other needs, linked to the potential of painting and collage. I translate my experience of the landscape, creating images suspended, suggested, sometimes masked or altered, that invite the eye to move inside the canvas.” - de Giovanelli explains.
“The pictorial matter is sedimented, sometimes scratched, printed, altered by household chemical processes. Lately I have experimented with different types of techniques: I have worked with pure pigments on canvas, left to settle on large fields of oil and moved by spray of turpentine, with the canvas horizontally. I used frottage to collect the real shape of a fragment of rock, the technique of marbling and I often combined these different elements with collage, in particular using cara mineral or transparent paper. Transparencies allow you to see what is under the surface, revealing the process of realization of the work. My work is the result of attempts, second thoughts and cancellations, of informal action and long reflections at the same time. I create works - from paintings to collage, frottage to installations - with the aim of making visible what the landscape is perceived superficially or secretly, and to approach the landscape in its entirety.” - the artist describes the creative process of her works.

Veronica de Giovanelli’s latest paintings delve into the landscape in its materiality, exploring the geology of its painterly layers. In her most recent works, the artist has experimented with the intrinsic possibilities of painting. She starts her paintings on the ground, with the canvas placed horizontally, allowing various layers of paint to settle. However, recently, she has played more with the material, for instance, letting pure pigments deposit on the canvas, sometimes moved by splashes of turpentine, in a personal alchemical process. Additionally, the artist has introduced the techniques of marbling and frottage into her work, combining these different elements with painting and collage, often using mineral or transparent papers. The resulting works distance themselves from the possibility of a scenic view, increasingly making room for painterly materiality, traced back to its nature of earth, liquid, and ancient magma. Veronica de Giovanelli’s mineral landscapes are punctuated by expansive light fields alternating with dense, overlaid, erased, and rewritten paintings, where the artist attempts to reinterpret and overturn traditional landscape painting conventions.
