Thomas Brambilla Gallery is pleased to present Robert Feintuch first solo show at the gallery, which opens on Friday December 18th, 2020 at 6:30 pm. The exhibition includes both recent and historical works by the American artist, which best describes his practice.

The show includes a series of paintings inspired by historical, mythological and cultural images such as the Assumption, Bacchus, Icarus and some cartoon series from his childhood. On the occasion of Feintuch solo show at Bates Museum, director Dan Mills, wrote “his subjects totter, or are ‘feet up’ dead and in the clouds, in ways that conjure up both Renaissance religious painting and Wile E. Coyote”.
In some paintings, the figure is shown with his legs up, in a position that may be both sexual and infantile, like a character that has been knocked out in a cartoon. There are also some paintings representing Hercules, a motif that has always been associated with power. However, here, the artist depicts him as fat and propped up from behind with a crutch. Feintuch’s paintings are biographical too: he inserts parts or all of his own body into each image combining the daily and banal with sublime, the serious and the ridiculous. Playing with the high historical and mythological imagery, his paintings result to be tragicomic and subversively ironic.
He denotes a certain cynicism about human nature, which wrestle with the humiliations that mortality, imposes on us. At the same time, the subjects are gracefully draw leaving a glimmer of grace, which we can find in beauty and hope. Drawing has, indeed, a central role in his practice, he once said: “I start by making drawings in sketchbooks, and if I like them enough I try to redraw them bigger… often using drawings or parts of drawings more than once. I sometimes make 10 or 15 drawings for one painting…But I also like drawings as things themselves.”

Robert Feintuch (b. 1953, Jersey City) lives and works in New York. He studied at Cooper Union (B.F.A. 1974) and the Yale University School of Art (M.F.A. 1976).
His work has been included in numerous international group exhibitions including shows at The Peggy Guggenheim Foundation (Venice), Ca’ Pesaro Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna (Venice), Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art (Porto), The Rupertinum (Salzburg), Museum für modern zeitgenössische Kunst (Bolzano), The National Academy Museum, (New York), The Addison Gallery of American Art, (Andover), and in the Venice Biennale. Feintuch has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim, Bogliasco, Rockefeller and Leube Foundations, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

La Galleria Thomas Brambilla è lieta di presentare la prima mostra personale dell’artista americano Robert Feintuch che inaugurerà venerdì 18 dicembre 2020 alle 18:30. La mostra è composta da una serie di opere sia recenti che storiche che meglio rappresentano la sua poetica.

Saranno esposti una serie di dipinti ispirati a immagini storiche, mitologiche e culturali come l'Assunzione, Bacco, Icaro e alcune personaggi di cartoni animati legati all’infanzia dell’artista.
I soggetti di alcune opere dell’artista sono rappresentati fra le nuove e con le gambe alzate, in una posizione che potrebbe essere sia sessuale che infantile, rimandando ai personaggi dei cartoni animati.
In occasione della mostra personale di Feintuch al Bates Museum, il direttore Dan Mills, ha scritto: "i suoi soggetti vacillano, oppure sono rappresentati con i “piedi in alto” morti e tra le nuvole, in modi che evocano sia la pittura religiosa rinascimentale e allo stesso tempo Willy il Coyote".
In altre opere, ritroviamo personaggi mitologici fuori dal loro tradizionale contesto iconografico e iconologico. È il caso di Ercole, solitamente associato all’ideale del potere, il quale viene rappresentato come grasso e storpio e che necessita di stampelle per poter sorreggersi. Le opere di Feintuch, inoltre, possono essere definite biografiche. L’artista, difatti, inserisce parti del proprio corpo in ogni opera, combinando il quotidiano ed il banale con il sublime, il serio ed il ridicolo. Giocando e rimescolando l’immaginario storico e mitologico con l’immaginario autobiografico e pop, i suoi dipinti risultano essere tragicomici e sovversivamente ironici.
Feintuch è un artista che scherza cinicamente sulla natura umana e sulla continua lotta alla mortalità e le relative umiliazioni. Ma, allo stesso tempo, i soggetti sono disegnati con una tale grazia e bellezza che lasciando intravedere nell’osservatore un barlume di speranza. Come lo stesso artista ci racconta, il disegno, ha da sempre un ruolo centrale nella sua pratica: “Comincio facendo disegni sugli album, e se mi piacciono abbastanza cerco di ridisegnarli più grandi... Spesso usando disegni o parti di disegni più di una volta. Realizzo 10 o 15 disegni per un dipinto... Ma sono affascinato anche dai disegni come opere a sé stanti".
