Nicola Pecoraro’s works are often created in connection with a place. Actually, they come to life thanks to the creative stimulation that surfaces during the various phases of artistic production. Among the exhibited works there is a group of sculptures that Nicola Pecoraro created during his sojourn in Catania, in close connection with wax artisans that still work with the material according to traditional methods. The monolithic structures of the sculptures have many sources: the molds made of new wood, materials found on the street, and other found objects picked up by the artist while looking for tools. In fact, for Nicola Pecoraro, the different phases of his artistic creation are very much intertwined: The selection of materials, their actual use and transformation into the finished sculpture are inseparable from each other. The finished artwork encapsulates every previous creative step; at the same time, each step contributes to distinctively define the artwork. The shapes usually recall big structures yet minimal contours; they are made of organic matter and porous material; the nature of the materials is reminiscent of the past.
The artworks created in Catania came to life in artisanal workshops; they were never the results of random uses of the materials. Rather, Pecoraro’s works are the result of smooth, carefully studied modes of production, where there is a constant and direct connection between the material and the artisan who uses it. The present exhibit is titled after a specific piece—Society—that originated from a series of images. These images were created from a single photograph, reprinted and retouched many times in different ways.
