Chapter Vlll of Journal presents a focus on Rosa Barba’s work and research. On show will be two performances and three interviews from three occasions: a solo show at CCA in Kitakyushu, Japan (2019), the exhibition From Source to Poem to Rhythm to Readerat Hangar Bicocca, Milan (2017), and her participation at the 8th Berlin Biennale in 2014. The excerpts highlight her ability to shift between multiple media and artistic languages: sculpture, installation and performance.

Barba’s aim is the subversion of ideas about film and its possibilities by extending and reverting its spatiality and materiality. In her collaboration with musician Chad Taylor, the interaction between light and sound proposes a radical take on the sensorial and temporal perception of film: the cinema projectors and the drums interact in such a way that they transform into a visual extension of the drums, blurring the boundaries between image, sound, and time, creating a real-time, performative film.

Barba’s films are an investigation into inscriptions and transformations of society, manifested in the landscape; the ambiguous relation between humans and nature, and the constant negotiations in the creation of the value deriving from it through specific collective performances, which she records and invests for the film. Throughout her work, she questions how we occupy space by investigating crisis through an unusual treatment of time and language.

Rosa Barba (Agrigento, Italy) lives and works in Berlin. Her work has been presented in several museums and institutions and is included in major public and private collections worldwide.

Il capitolo VIll di Journal presenta un approfondimento sul lavoro e la ricerca di Rosa Barba. Si tratta di due performance e tre interviste in occasione, rispettivamente: della personale al CCA, Kitakyushu, Giappone (2019), della personale From Source to Poem to Rhythm to Reader all’Hangar Biccoca, Milano (2017), e della partecipazione alla 8° Berlin Biennale nel 2014. Gli estratti ci rivelano l’abilità dell’artista di muoversi attraverso varie forme d’arte e linguaggi artistici come la scultura, l’installazione e la performance.

L’obiettivo dell’artista è la sovversione delle idee sul cinema e le sue possibilità, estendendo e invertendo il concetto di spazio e materia. Nella sua collaborazione con il musicista Chad Taylor l’interazione tra luce e suono ci fornisce una visione radicale della percezione sensoriale e temporale del film: i proiettori cinematografici e la batteria interagiscono in modo tale da trasformarsi in un’estensione visiva dello strumento, offuscando i confini tra immagine, suono e tempo, creando un film performativo in tempo reale.

I film di Rosa Barba sono un’indagine sulle trasformazioni della società e i segni che lasciano sul paesaggio; attraverso specifiche performance collettive, che registra e utilizza per i suoi film, svela l'ambigua relazione tra uomo e natura e le continue negoziazioni nella creazione del valore che ne deriva. Attraverso il suo lavoro, si domanda come occupiamo lo spazio investigando la crisi attraverso un insolito trattamento di tempo e linguaggio.

Rosa Barba (Agrigento, Italia) vive e lavora a Berlino. Il suo lavoro è stato presentato in molti musei ed è incluso nelle principali collezioni pubbliche e private di tutto il mondo.
