Il progetto nasce nell’estate del 2011 dopo essermi reso conto che i miei ritratti venivano utilizzati dai soggetti fotografati come “avatar” nei social network. Mi sono posto alcune domande.

Come è mutato nella nostra epoca il concetto di ritratto rispetto alle epoche precedenti? Come è cambiato negli ultimi anni il modo di fruire la nostra immagine personale?
Per quanti un ritratto equivale a immagine del profilo?
A che scopo ci facciamo fotografare?
Perché dunque non realizzare una sorta di indagine sociale fotografica trasformando il risultato in una convincente operazione artistica?
Come trovare un campione di persone con cui operare questa sorta di esperimento?

Ho così preso contatto con un sito di gruppi d’acquisto, studiando appositamente un’offerta per uno shooting fotografico professionale ad un prezzo bassissimo, allo scopo di raggiungere il numerp più elevato di persone sconosciute e disparate.

Tra le centinaia di persone che hanno acquistato il coupon 180 mi hanno contattato per farsi fotografare. Alla fine dei 7 mesi di riprese avevo ritratto rappresentanti di ogni ceto sociale e professione: dal cuoco all’attore, dal manager all’impiegato, dalla commessa al medico alle famiglie al completo.

The project was born in the summer of 2011, after I have realized that persons I had portrait, were using my portraits as "avatar" in their social networks accounts. So, I started to ask myself a few questions.

How has the concept of portraiture mutated during the ages?
How has the way we benefit of our self image changed in the past few years?
For how many: portrait equals profile picture?
To what end do we have our photographs taken?
So why not realize a photographic social research and turn it into a convincing work of art?
How to find a sample of people willing to join this sort of experiment?

I made contact with a deal-of-the-day website, then tailored an extremely low price deal for a professional photo shoot, that could lead me to reach the biggest number of various and unfamiliar people.

Among hundreds who bought the coupon, 180 of them have contacted me to have their photographs taken. At the end, after 7 months of shooting I had portrayed representatives from any social class and profession: starting from a chef to an actor, from a manager to a simple employee, from a clerk to a surgeon, up to a whole family.
