Il lavoro di Dana è relativamente sconosciuto nella sua città natale e questa mostra rappresenta una retrospettiva selezionata delle sue opere più belle che possono essere considerate racconti, paesaggi urbani, documentazione del vissuto, non avendo mai perso il suo spirito fiorentino.

Dana Michahelles (1933-2002) è nata a Firenze ed è figlia di artisti. Suo padre era il pittore fiorentino Ram (Ruggero Michahelles), suo zio era Thayat, il pittore futurista e suo bisnonno era Hyram Powers, lo scultore neoclassico americano. Ha frequentato l'Istituto delle Belle Arti di Firenze ma all'età di 15 anni è partita per l'Africa, dove è rimasta per 27 anni, un’esperienza che le ha permesso una nuova identità come artista. Al suo ritorno a Firenze, per ristabilire se stessa, l’avremmo potuta vedere, per esempio, seduta su un piccolo sgabello in mezzo al traffico pedonale di Ponte Vecchio a disegnare in modo accurato lungo il ponte o in via Calzaiuoli a disegnare le vetrine dei negozi. La sua produzione artistica è varia e va dai dettagliati disegni a penna e inchiostro di architettura, ritratti, piante esotiche e animali, ai dipinti ad olio su tela.

DANA MICHAHELLES: ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS FROM FLORENCE

Dana Michahelles (1933-2002) was born in Florence, Italy, and was the daughter of artists. Her father was the Florentine painter Ram (Ruggero Michahelles), her uncle was the Futurist painter Thayat, and her great-grandfather was Hyram Powers, the Neoclassical American sculptor. She attended the Institute of Fine Arts in Florence, but at age 15, she left for Africa where she remained for 27 years, creating a contrasting identity as an artist. Upon returning to Florence and restablishing herself, she could have been found, for example, seated on a small stool in the middle of Ponte Vecchio foot traffic drawing an accurate representation, spanning over 30 feet, of the vital old bridge or in Via Calzaioli recording shop façades. Her artistic production is varied from meticulously detailed pen and ink drawings of architecture, portraits, exotic plants and animals, to rigorous oil paintings on canvas.
Dana's work is relatively unknown in her birth city, and this exhibition represents a selected retrospective of her finest works which can be considered narratives, cityscapes, and visual documentation illustrating life as it is being lived, never having lost her Florentine spirit.
