"That first time I entered the church, I had a sense not only of water beneath, but as though I was standing in the magnetic path of some mysterious liquid current passing between the left and right walls. It was almost as if the church itself was alive. I decided to make paintings—for the left wall and the right, and that they should communicate somehow with each other. I thought of my mother (who has been dead now for ten years). I wanted to make a painting that would be about her for the left wall, and I intended to make a larger painting for the right wall that could speak to her emotionally and spiritually across the divide. I wanted the paintings to connect also to the historical significance of the church." –Celia Paul, 2025
