Bruce Reynolds (Australia Council Resident Artist, luglio-settembre 2013) è un artista australiano che è cresciuto a Canberra, ha studiato a Melbourne e insegna presso il Queensland College of Art di Brisbane. Il suo lavoro si basa in genere sulle reazioni al riuso di materiali urbani, ed è rappresentato nelle collezioni della Queensland Art Gallery, National Gallery of Australia, Museum of Brisbane, Artbank, nei musei d’arte della Queensland University of Technology e University of Queensland, e gallerie d’arte regionali. Ha da poco completato un’importante commissione di arte pubblica per la Fiera di Brisbane e Centro Congressi. Mary-Jean Richardson (AEAF Cibo Espresso Resident, luglio-settembre 2013) è un’artista visiva che vive a Adelaide, la cui pratica è motivata in particolare dal gioco di tradizione e trasgressione attraverso la mobilità, mutevolezza e capacità di reinvenzione della pittura. Mary-Jean ha conseguito il Master in Arti Visive presso la School of Art, Architecture and Design della University of South Australia nel 2010. Insegna pittura presso la Adelaide Central School of Art, South Australia. Tra le sue mostre personali, “Feeling the way”, Adelaide Central Gallery, 2012, e “Underground”, Greenaway Art Gallery 2010. “Incipiente, incompleto e impermanente – di recente, questi termini si sono infiltrati nel mio pensiero nello studio. La maggior parte delle idee riguardanti conclusione e completezza nel mio lavoro sono state accantonate. Il trascorrere tempo a Roma, lavorando nello studio all’Accademia Britannica, ha messo a nudo una realtà che fonde finzione, fatto, credenza, passato e presente. La certezza si sposta e si modifica da ogni punto di vista incontrato. Ho usato ciò come stimolo a fare nuove opere. Questi dipinti sono un serio gioco tra stile storico, ossessive preoccupazioni personali, e il procedimento stesso della pittura. Tecniche barocche, e la deliberata evitazione della ‘fine’ sono stati utilizzati per evocare reliquie, oggetti e immagini allo stesso tempo comprensibili e del tutto misteriosi.” [Mary-Jean Richardson]

The evening presents, as part of the The British School at Rome’s Fine Arts Programme directed by Jacopo Benci, new works by Bruce Reynolds, Australia Council Resident Artist, and Mary-Jean Richardson, AEAF Cibo Espresso Studio Resident, created during their residencies at the BSR between July and September 2013. The works will be exhibited in the BSR gallery.

Bruce Reynolds (Australia Council Resident Artist, July-September 2013) is an Australian based artist who grew up in Canberra, studied in Melbourne and lectures at the Queensland College of Art in Brisbane. His practice is generally based on responses to the reuse of urban materials and is represented in the collections of the Queensland Art Gallery, National Gallery of Australia, Museum of Brisbane, Artbank, QUT and UQ Art Museums and regional art galleries. He has recently completed a major public art commission for the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre. He recently made trips to Northern China and Bangladesh to pursue an interest in the historic migration of ideas and forms associated with lapis lazuli, linking Europe and Asia.
“The patterns of our immediate environment strike me as indicative of our collective approach to other matters. Previous work evolving from collage, painting and photography , has been largely concerned with the reuse of flooring material and ground surfaces reflecting the recent history of our decorative impulses and of our pragmatism while inviting the contemplation of a broader perspective. In Rome, an infusion of input including the insignias of power and the materials of the secular have formed the basis of an attempt to combine and reflect materials and ideas in terms of notation and research to inform the way I work with architectural as well as studio based projects.” [Bruce Reynolds]

Mary-Jean Richardson (AEAF Cibo Espresso Resident, July-September 2013) is an Adelaide based visual artist whose practice is specifically motivated by the interplay of traditions and transgression via painting’s mobility, mutability and capacity for reinvention. Mary-Jean completed a Masters of Visual Art at the School of Art, Architecture and Design, University of South Australia in 2010. She lectures in painting at Adelaide Central School of Art, South Australia. Solo exhibitions include “Feeling the way”, Adelaide Central Gallery 2012 and “Underground”, Greenaway Art Gallery 2010. “Incipient, incomplete and impermanent - recently, these terms have infiltrated my thinking in the studio. Most ideas around conclusion and wholeness within my work have been shoved aside. Spending time in Rome working at the British School has laid bare a reality that conflates fiction, fact, belief, past and present. Certainty shifts and changes from every point of view encountered. This has been used as an impetus for making new work. These paintings are a serious play between historical style, obsessive personal concerns and the process of painting itself. Baroque techniques, and a deliberate avoidance of ‘the end’ have been used to evoke relics, objects and images that are simultaneously comprehensible and utterly mysterious.” [Mary-Jean Richardson]
