We are delighted to announce Albin Mattioli’s solo exhibition ‘The Lost Portraits’ at Studio DFB, curated by Francesca de’ Medici, opening on Saturday, 19 September 2026, 6-9 pm Focusing on Albin Mattioli’s personal experiences, this show pays homage to the people close to his heart, to the communities that have welcomed and embraced him on four different continents and celebrates those who are still present, some who aren’t with us any longer and places that still linger in sweet or painful memory. Albin’s portraits were never lost, nor did they ever lose themselves. Loss is ultimately about one’s own perception of presence or absence thereof. For those who remain, it’s about profound changes, and adjusting to a world completely and permanently altered by that absence. Mattioli doesn’t dwell on life’s brevity and fragility, but doesn’t deny them altogether either. Memories, or lost portraits, abstract or figurative are, in all their misty imperfection, gentle prayers. They chant like litanies, rounded like soft shadows, sometimes dimming whilst also reminding us of some essential, subjective truths. Rather than enabling feelings on unfinished business and dragging sorrow and regret, Albin’s works are so very like him, true and honest, uncompromising about his scale of values, a flowing river into his own heart. A selection of raw and compelling works developed over the past few years, ‘The Lost Portraits’ are a soulful inquiry into the astounding nature of fraternal friendship, kinships that rival blood relations and a deep-rooted yearning for quietude and peace. Almost a reverse side of the very same coin, they also represent Albin’s reflection on his own encounters with systemic racism and the commodification of identity within Western power structures. Each work is ultimately a tender yet uncompromising reminder of how living mindfully in the now is intimately related with and an enriching antidote to the transient, impermanent and often quite intimidating nature of life. Concentrandosi sulle esperienze personali di Albin Mattioli, questa mostra rende omaggio alle persone a lui care, alle comunità che lo hanno accolto e abbracciato su quattro diversi continenti, celebrando coloro che sono fra noi, chi non lo è più ed i luoghi che sopravvivono nella sua storia attraverso ricordi sia felici che dolorosi.

I ritratti di Albin non sono mai andati perduti, né si sono smarriti. La perdita riguarda la percezione che si ha della presenza o dell’assenza di qualcuno. Per chi resta, si tratta di affrontare cambiamenti profondi e di adattarsi a un mondo trasformato radicalmente.

I ritratti perduti, astratti o figurativi che siano, nella loro nebbiosa imperfezione sono preghiere sommesse e gentili. Litanie che si diramano come ombre soffici, talvolta si fanno più fievoli, pur ricordandoci alcune verità essenziali e soggettive.

Lungi dal volersi ancorare a questioni in sospeso o trascinarsi in dolore e rimpianti, le opere di Albin rispecchiano la sua natura, rimanendo autentiche e oneste, fedeli a una scala di valori integra con la forza di un fiume sacro che penetra nel suo cuore.

"The Lost Portraits" esplora con profonda sensibilità la natura straordinaria delle amicizie fraterne con un radicato desiderio di serenità e pace. Queste opere riflettono inoltre l'esperienza diretta dell'artista con il razzismo sistemico che permea dall'interno le strutture di potere occidentali. Ogni opera di Albin Mattioli è un richiamo, tenero e intransigente insieme, a vivere il presente e di quanto questo sia intimamente connesso alla natura transitoria e a volte angosciosa della vita. Albin ci offre un antidoto sensibile e prezioso.
