Stefano Cagol, The Ice Monolith – After Land
Starting from 8am on May 6 for 72 hours
Artist’s Performance: May 6 at 4pm
Riva Ca’ di Dio, Venice

Following the unveiling of its debut at the Venice Biennale and the exhibition project, the National Pavilion of the Republic of Nauru is pleased to announce that the Venice Biennale has accepted an additional proposal to present an intervention in Venice’s public spaces by one of its participating artists.

Stefano Cagol’s The Ice Monolith – After Land will take shape along Riva Ca’ di Dio, near the Circolo Sottufficiali. A block of Alpine ice is left to melt under the sun along the Venetian shore, establishing a symbolic connection between the Alps, the Lagoon, and Nauru – the smallest island nation in the world. These seemingly distant territories are brought together by the shared threat of disappearance and climate vulnerability.
The installation represents a continuity with the first edition of the work, created in 2013 at the Venice Biennale for the National Pavilion of the Maldives, in the very same location, in a context similarly focused on ecological thought. More than a decade later, the work’s message is even more urgent and necessary. Its re-presentation is not a mere repetition, but a critical update that amplifies and renews its power as a witness to our time.

Stefano Cagol, who is also presenting the video installation We Are All Nauru (featuring ecological exorcisms between Texas and Greenland) within the pavilion spaces, will personally perform with the ice at 4pm on May 6th. This will precede the official inauguration of the pavilion, just a 5-minute walk away, scheduled for 5pm.
