Comunicato stampa

The solo exhibition of Arianna Carossa opens the 2016 events program of the Jorn House Museum which has been designed and planned by the Association Friends of the Jorn House Museum in partnership with the Municipality of Albissola Marina. It is therefore a preview of the theatre shows, conferences and exhibitions that you will be living this summer in the Museum.
We are extremely honored to start this new cultural journey with such a renowned artist, whose career is established since years between Italy and New York. It is also a great pleasure for us that Arianna Carossa herself had the desire to measure her art with a place rich in symbols and influences as Jorn’s House.
I can’t wait to see the works that Arianna has specifically thought and produced for Albissola, confident that they have been placed with respect and courage in the complex and stimulating context chosen by the artist.

/ COMUNICATO STAMPA

/ PRESS RELEASE
The solo show by Arianna Carossa (Genoa 1973) launches the first year of programming at the Jorn House Museum. It is also the first temporary exhibiton of a living artist held in this venue since the end of its restoration (2014).
For Arianna Carossa (living and working in New York) it’s like returning to the use of clay and to the town of Albisola, where several years ago she spent a lot of time working. While the names of ceramic manufacturers and artisans change (yesterday it was the Piral company, and the potter Marco Tortarlo, today it is the G. Mazzotti 1903 company, with the same assistant, Ennio Sirello) her passion for both research in situ and site specific work are the same as ever (actually stronger). In the meanwhile, Arianna has experimented languages and objects focusing on their disappearance or manipulation in unusual environments. The great modern design tradition (from Lenci to Gio Ponti) provided Carossa with the tools to question our
perception of what is real, of artworks, of their context and phenomenology. Twice a year (in summertime and winter), for a
couple of months, Arianna leaves New York and comes back to Genoa. She needs to do so to balance the rythm
of her thoughts and give her projects okygen. Soemetimes, as today, it happens that an idea, risen years before, takes shape through the encounter with a place, suitable for hosting it and making it grow. In Albissola Marina, Tullio Mazzotti, head of the ceramics handicraft company G. Mazzotti 1903, supported Arianna Carossa's project, making available to her the spaces, materials and expertises of his workshop. Arianna Carossa chose to immerse once again in the environment of Albissola to carry out an exchange between the historical tradition of art ceramics and her own experience. During such an intense research many works -hybrid and promiscuous, sculptural and ephemeral, conceptual and ‘materic’- conceived for the rooms of Jorn’s house and studio, came to birth. Asger Jorn’s life and work were deeply connected to the name of the Mazzotti pottery; here, between the 40s and the 50s, the two (futurists) brothers Tullio d’Albisola and Torido Mazzotti relaunched ceramic production thanks to the cooperation with international artists. In her installations Arianna Carossa uses objets trouvés with a strong identity; they are usually works of craft and design, assembled into raw combinations, absolutely unconventional, that stress the past (physical, psychological, environmental) of the object, the artwork and the artist as well.
The Association Friends of the Jorn House Museum, founded in 2015 with the aim of promoting and enhancing the Asger Jorn House Museum, organized this exhibition on the premises of the agreement with the Municipality of Albissola Marina for the co-management of the venue.

STATEMENT DELL’ARTISTA

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
“I always try to connect my work to the environment where I develop the project. This is the strongest feature of my practice and it drives me to look for situations where the design itself is related with everything around me. The choice of the studio follows this principle. The studio where I dwell becomes the material on which I work and its context becomes part of the structure itself. Moreover, not only the area where the studio is located but often the purpose of the place is very important too; carpentry, construction hub, furniture factory, agricultural center, wine cellar: these are just some of the places I used as studios. This way I can get in touch with people outside the art world, but with specific expertise in other fields. For me, changing studio means changing community and way of expression, it means finding connections with the place. The works I am going to show at the Jorn House Museum try to connect to the environment and the space, keeping at the same time a sort of independence from the context. Ceramic works evolve as a part (actually many parts) of installations made of furnishings: furniture with parts in ceramics, objects restored with ceramics. I focus especially on gold, imagining gold ceramics flowing out of cabinet drawers, or chairs becoming thrones as shapeless golden ceramic objects, and so on…”

Arianna Carossa was born in 1973 in Genoa, where she lived and worked at the beginning of her career. Since 2011 she lives
in New York, carrying out her research mainly in the USA. The core of her work is the object, considered as a starting point that she reinvents and develops drawing from the poetics of Arte Povera. Through an absolutely personal approach, she assembles common materials and home furnishings, ceramics and paintings, reflecting on universal themes. Currently, without overlooking the object, she focuses her attention on the loss of the imaginary caused by a totally revealed reality. After having published her book The aesthetic of my disappearance (MOMA/PS1, 2014), Carossa acts performances which make the viewer feel at the same time familiar and uncomfortable with the artistic object.

The JORN HOUSE MUSEUM is an international center for contemporary art, owned by the Municipality of Albissola Marina. Along with the Exhibition Centre, the Artists’ Promenade and the Alba Docilia Furnace, it is part of the MuDA Musem -Museo Diffuso Albisola-, curated by the Archive of Contemporary Art of the University of Genoa on behalf of DIRAAS (Department of Italian Literature, Antiquities, Romanistics, Arts and Theatre). Since 1957, along with his friend and assistant Umberto Gambetta, Asger Jorn (Vejrum 1914 – Aarhus 1973) created and transformed this place. Before his death, Jorn bequeathed his house, studio and garden to the Municipality of Albissola Marina, in order to make it a public museum. Jorn donated to the Municipality also a collection of his ceramics, which are now housed at the MuDA Exhibtition Centre, along with works by Fontana, Lam, Crippa, Scanavino, Fabbri, Sassu and other 20th century artists who lived and worked in Albisola. www.museodiffusoalbisola.it

In spring 2014, to mark the centenary of Asger Jorn's birth, the Asger Jorn House Museum in Albissola Marina officially opened to the public, hosting the exhibition Asger Jorn. The Form and Beyond. Thereafter, Jorn’s House began its new public life, made of cultural events, research projects, international meetings, visits of artists, curators, journalists and people from every part of Europe. In the summer of 2015 an experimental cooperation project started between the Municipality of Albissola Marina (to which this place belongs) and the newly founded Association Friends of Jorn House Museum, aimed at managing in partnership the Museum.

The FRIENDS OF THE JORN HOUSE MUSEUM is a Non Profit Association established in 2015 by a group of professionals in the fields of cultural research, management and promotion. The aim of the Association is to enhance the Jorn House Museum by promoting it, improving its fruition and contributing in making it a lively and creative place where to enjoy contemporary art, culture and research. www.amicidicasajorn.it
