L’artista israelo-americano domina pittura, scrittura, video e cinema, e spesso i suoi progetti complessi combinano mezzi e tecniche in modo molto originale. L'arte di Rosen offre articolazioni provocatorie delle zone di confine dell'identità attraverso la costruzione di un alter ego artistico o costringendo lo spettatore ad identificarsi con una figura storica moralmente ambigua. Il più recente dei personaggi fittizi e politicamente scorretti di Rosen, Maxim Komar-Myskin, sarà al centro di questa mostra: un artista ex-sovietico e paranoico che immagina di dar battaglia a Vladimir Putin torturandolo e facendolo uccidere da oggetti animati.

Anticipa la mostra l’evento Vladimir's Night - On Dirty Politics and Erotic Animism, realizzato in collaborazione con il PAC di Milano, in cui l’artista presenterà i suoi lavori più recenti, all'interno della mostra GLITCH. Interferenze tra arte e cinema in Italia, in corso al Padiglione milanese: una proiezione di The Buried Alive Videos - in anteprima al Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma 2013, dove è stato premiato con una menzione speciale - e il lancio del suo ultimo libro d'artista, Vladimir’s Night, in collaborazione con Bookcity Milano.
La mostra in galleria, così come il libro e il film sono incentrati su Maxim Komar-Myskin, un giovane artista e scrittore emigrato da Mosca a Tel Aviv nel 2004, dove ha fondato il Buried Alive, un collettivo di espatriati ex-sovietici che si sono definiti come zombie della culturala russa. Maxim Komar-Myskin fittiziamente si suicidò nel 2011.

La mostra ruota intorno a due progetti, l'album Vladimir’s Night e la serie Astrological Paranoia. Vladimir’s Night è l’opera principale di Komar-Myskin, prodotta segretamente, si compone di 39 tempere e versi. Si tratta di un ibrido tra un libro per bambini, una favola macabra, un attacco politico a Vladimir Putin e il prodotto di una mente paranoica, in cui una serie di oggetti animati si uniscono a Vladimir nel suo letto, e, infine, lo torturano fino alla morte. Realizzato nel formato impiegato dagli artisti dissidenti di Mosca degli anni 1970 (Kabakov e Pivovarov), l'album è completato dalle annotazioni di un altro personaggio fittizio, la studiosa di letteratura Rosa Chabanova.

Completa il percorso una selezione di 10 opere su carta dalla serie Astrological Paranoia che Komar-Myskin produsse tra il 2006-2008. In queste opere, il delirio assume una forma comicamente diretta, con costellazioni in cielo che compongono immagini e frasi, ad esempio, un asino bicipite al posto dell’aquila nello stemma russo o la frase “Pasta alla Putinesca” all’interno dell’opera Dinner at Silvio's (Cena da Silvio) da cui la mostra trae il suo titolo.

L’opera Vladimir’s Night è stata mostrata ampiamente in molti musei e istituzioni internazionali – tra cui la Biennale di Taipei e la mostra Animism a Vienna e Berlino. I 10 dipinti di Astrological Paranoia saranno esposti in questa mostra per la prima volta.

Roee Rosen è nato a Rehovot, in Israele, nel 1963. Vive e lavora in Israele. È conosciuto per opere eccezionalmente complesse e polemiche che mescolano sesso e politica, ironia e orrore, storia e attualità. Rosen ha esposto in tutto il mondo e ha vinto numerosi premi. Il suo film Tse [Out], ha vinto il Premio Orizzonti per il miglior mediometraggio al Festival del Cinema di Venezia 2010. Il suo libro Justine Frank, Sweet Sweat è stato indicato come uno dei migliori libri del 2009 dalla rivista Artforum. Recentemente ha avuto una mostra personale presso CCA a Varsavia e Iniva a Londra. Proiezioni dedicate interamente alla sua opera sono state tenute alla Tate Modern di Londra, al Museo d’Arte Moderna di Vienna e al Festival del Cinema di Oberhausen, tra gli altri. L'ultimo film di Rosen, The Buried Alive Videos, è stato presentato in anteprima al Festival del Film di Roma 2013, e ha ricevuto una menzione speciale. Il suo ultimo libro, Maxim Komar-Myskin, Vladimir’s Night è stato pubblicato nel 2014 da Sternberg Press. Rosen è professore presso lo Ha'Midrasha Art College e alla Bezalel Art Academy in Israele. Prossimamente si terrà una sua retrospettiva al Tel Aviv Museum nel 2015.

Galleria Riccardo Crespi is proud to present Roee Rosen's second solo exhibition in Italy. The Israeli-American artist masters painting, writing, video and film making, and his intricate projects often combine all these media in highly original ways. Rosen's art offers provocative articulations of the twilight zones of identity through the channelling of alternative artistic personae or by compelling the spectator to inhabit the body of a morally problematic historic figure. The most recent of Rosen's fictive and politically provocative figures, Maxim Komar-Myskin, will be at the centre of this exhibition: a paranoiac ex-Soviet artist who tried to do battle with Vladimir Putin by having him tortured and killed by animated objects.

A special event with the artist, Vladimir's Night - On Dirty Politics and Erotic Animism, in collaboration with PAC Milano - within the exhibition GLITCH. Interferenze tra arte e cinema in Italia, ongoing at the Pavilion in Milan - will combine a lecture-performance exposing the exhibition, a special screening, and a book launch of the artist’s last book, Vladimir's Night (Sternberg Press, 2014), in collaboration with Bookcity Milano. The film The Buried Alive Videos, premiered at the Rome International Film Festival 2013, where it was awarded with a special mention, will be projected on this occasion.

The show at the gallery, as well as the book and the film focus on Maxim Komar-Myshkin, a young artist and writer who immigrated from Moscow to Tel Aviv in 2004. There, he founded The Buried Alive, a collective of ex-Soviet immigrants that defined themselves as Russian cultural zombies. Maxim Komar-Myshkin supposedly committed suicide in 2011.

The exhibition will center on two main projects. The album Vladimir's Night, Komar-Myshkin's secretly produced magnum opus, is made up of 39 gouaches and verse. It is a hybrid of a children book, a gruesome fable, a political assault on Vladimir Putin and a reflection of a paranoiac mindset, the album sees a host animated objects who join Vladimir in bed, and eventually torture and assassinate him. Realized in the album format employed by Moscow's unofficial artists of the 1970s (Kabakov and Pivovarov), the album is supplemented by the annotations of yet another fictive persona, the literary scholar Rosa Chabanova.

The exhibition also includes a selection of 10 works on paper from the series Astrological Paranoia, which Komar-Myshkin supposedly produced between 2006-2008. In these works, paranoia assumes a comically direct form, as star constellations in the sky create both images (for example, a new emblem for Russia with a double headed donkey instead of a double headed eagle), and sentences. One of those features the sentence that gives the exhibition its name – “Pasta alla Putinesca” – the work's title is Dinner at Silvio's.

Vladimir's Night has been shown extensively worldwide – among other places at the Taipei Biennial and the exhibition Animism in Vienna and Berlin. The 10 Astrological Paranoia paintings are shown in this show for the first time.

Roee Rosen was born in Rehovot, Israel, in 1963. He lives and works in Israel. He is known for exceptionally complex and polemic works which enmeshes sexuality and politics, humor and horror, history and the present. Rosen has exhibited worldwide and won numerous awards. His film Tse [Out], won the Orizzonti Award for best medium-length film at the Venice Film Festival, 2010. His book Justine Frank, Sweet Sweat was listed as one of the best books of 2009 by Artforum magazine. Recent solo exhibitions include the CCA in Warsaw and INIVA in London. Profile screenings dedicated to his work were held by Tate Modern, London, the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna and the Oberhausen film festival, among others. Rosen's latest film, The Buried Alive Videos, premiered at the Rome Film Festival, 2013, and was awarded a special mention. His latest book, Maxim Komar-Myshkin, Vladimir's Night was published in 2014 by Sternberg Press. Rosen is a professor at Ha'Midrasha Art College, and at the Bezalel Art Academy, Israel. His retrospective is forthcoming at the Tel Aviv Museum in 2015.
