Wolfgang Weileder – Rifugio
Comunicato stampa
From Wednesday, October 29, through Friday, November 6, artist Wolfgang Weileder—born in Munich and currently a professor of contemporary sculpture at Newcastle University—will lead a workshop at the neon space together with several students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, from the +T program (design of urban and territorial interventions).
The installation RIFUGIO references Rome’s Palace of Justice, the so-called Palazzaccio. RIFUGIO invites us to rethink the relationship between the public and the private, the role and obligations we have as citizens in society and in the political debate, while at the same time inviting us to reconsider the right to have a personal space in which to take refuge. It juxtaposes a sculptural representation of our legal system—which defines our rights both as individuals and as a community—with the waste materials from consumer society that we discard after using them to furnish our secure private spaces.
RIFUGIO is not a work to be passively contemplated, but a device that serves as a catalyst for other activities, encouraging the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and technical skills, with the goal of creating a non-competitive community through a work that originates within the realm of contemporary art.
Following the opening—which will take place on Friday, November 6, at 6:00 p.m.—RIFUGIO will host a program of talks, presentations, performances, installations, and readings that will span the coming months, thanks to the contributions of students and faculty from the Academy of Fine Arts and other voices from civil society.
