Comunicato stampa

Galleria Six is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition WILHELM VON GLOEDEN (Wismar 1856 - Taormina 1931), curated by Chiara Bertoni, 29 October - 29 November 2022.

When in 1878 I began my work of capturing real scenes of life through photography, it was a very difficult task.
Photography was then relegated to the photographer's studio and relied solely on the artificial lighting of the terrace.
Only exceptionally would the photographer leave his studio to reproduce some landscape or architecture.

I came to Italy to refresh my physique, I regained my health with the sun of Italy, and I had from the sky of Italy an immense help in the photographic work for which the sun is such a part.

The great artist, Sen. Francesco Paolo Michetti, to whom I presented my first modest photographic works in Francavilla al Mare, encouraged me with his heartfelt approval to continue in this difficult undertaking. He wanted to call me an artist, and to my objection that no painting had ever come out of my hands, no matter how much I had studied at the Weimar Academy, he replied:
'Painting is an art in which one can be an artist or a craft; photography, on the other hand, is a craft, but one is an artist in it'.

Today there is no longer any doubt that with an artistic temperament, even the most anti-artistic camera can admirably reproduce happy and sad scenes from real life and give us works full of poetry, light and beauty.
While the technical means to produce works of art are not lacking in photography today, these means must be studied as they are in painting.
If different opinions still contend the field today, it is because not a few in the application of technical means are prone to exaggerations that cannot be approved... they may be worth surprising the eye, but they can create nothing.
I have never believed it necessary for photography to deny its origin in order to elevate itself.

It does not need to lower itself to this in order to give those with an artistic temperament the opportunity to revive in their photographic work the feelings they had before nature.
