The project Paolo Pellegrin – Volatilia brings together a selection of works by the Italian
photographer focused on the theme of flight and its forms in nature. Shot in Japan and
Norway, the photographs and the video on display form a realistic visual flock that
envelops the viewer, immersing them in an intense and contemplative experience.
In Kyoto, to take part in an artist residency organized in 2019 as part of the Kyotographie
festival, Pellegrin is struck by the majestic aerial ballet of a colony of black kites soaring over
the Shimogamo Shrine. Their dazzling speed is captured through tight framing: the birds
seem to burst out of the lens or vanish into it at full speed, like an endless dance. These
birds of prey invite us into a mysterious world where the animal element reigns supreme.
This powerful and untamed presence emerges even more vividly in the photographs taken
in Norway, also in 2019, for a feature published in The Voyage Issue of The New York Times
Magazine. The central figure here is the Norwegian sea eagle, queen of all raptors for its
grandeur and beauty.
“The result is a celebration of these animals, captured in collective motion or individually,
with the penetrating gaze of a bird that now and then dives into our world with vibrant
intensity.” (G. Lesaffre, 2021)
