Omaggio a Robert Redford
Moda musica e film.
Comunicato stampa
From December 18, 2025, to March 15, 2026, Boncompagni Ludovisi House Museum, directed by
Maria Giuseppina Di Monte and affiliated with the Pantheon and Castel Sant'Angelo Institute –
National Museums of Rome, led by Luca Mercuri, will host Homage to Robert Redford. Fashion
Music and Film
The exhibition is connected to the film festival curated by Raffaele Simongini, film historian and
professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts of Naples and at the RUFA-Rome University of Fine
Arts.
The show combines the visual and performing arts, highlighting the central function of cinema and
its role as an incubator of trends, behaviors, and lifestyles. Robert Redford, who recently passed
away, was an icon of 1970s cinema, a free spirit, a nonconformist and a critic, starring in
memorable films that shaped not only the tastes but also the way of being and thinking of those
years.
In an era when the dialogue between art, cinema, and photography was more experimental, his
films represent a break with the past, introducing new forms of representation both in the western
genre with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and in investigative journalism, which was just
then finding its place and identity, with All the President's Men representing the turning point for
the establishment of this genre. The tribute to the great American artist highlights how cinema has
shaped, guided, and permeated habits and lifestyles and contributed to determining ethical and
aesthetic choices.
The exhibition opens with a display of clothing inspired by films in which the setting, scenery, and
costumes form a multifaceted interweaving, accompanying the viewer on a journey through fashion
via images and garments from the historic Farani Tailoring Collection, a partner in the project. The
clothes on display, most of which come from the historic Roman tailor's shop Farani, directed by
Luigi Piccolo, recall the romantic scenes of The Great Gatsby, from the novel of the same name by
Francis Scott Fitzgerald, or echo the hilarious adventures of the two protagonists of The Sting
(Redford and Newman), or allude to the world of yesteryear in which Africa was the idealized land
of Europeans who took refuge there in the early 20th century in search of lost authenticity, as in Out
of Africa. Nor could the legendary blue pea coat from Three Days of the Condor be missing, worn
with jeans and Ray-Bans, defining the discreet and practical elegance of urban casual wear that has
become a style, making cinema one of the main vehicles for the spread of trends, habits, and
customs, highlighting the emblematic traits of the American artist, who never emphasized his status
as a sex symbol, sometimes experienced with annoyance or indifference, shunning the stereotypes
and oppressive labels of the Hollywood star system.
The exhibition opens with a musical tribute by the group Apeiron Sax Quartet performing pieces
from the soundtracks of the most famous films. Starting in January and continuing until March 15,
2026, there will be film screenings introduced by film historian Raffaele Simongini, curator of the
film festival, which is the result of cooperation with Rome University of Fine Arts and his Director
Fabio Mongelli.
The screening schedule will be available on the website of the National Museums of Rome and on
social media (FB, X, Instagram) starting January 10, 2026.
