COLORE by Lindsay Mapes (b. 1977, U.S.A.), opening on July 5 at the SACI Gallery, explores themes of erasure, obfuscation, obstruction, and secrecy in a series of boldly-colored paintings and drawings. Through an extended editing process in which layers of form, line, and color are built up, scraped away, revealed, and hidden, the artist draws upon the concept of the pentimento (from the Italian pentirsi, to repent), which, in painting, refers to an alteration evidenced by traces of the artist’s previous mark-marking, revealing the changes made during the painting process. In this way, Mapes examines how a thought process can be realized in paint.
Based in London since receiving an MFA from The Slade University College London, her work often brings her back to Florence, where she studied at SACI in 2007.

La mostra COLORE di Lindsay Mapes, presenta una serie di dipinti dai colori vividissimi esplorando i temi di cancellatura, offuscamento, sovrapposizione, sedimentazione e segretezza. I suoi lavori sono realizzati seguendo un lungo processo di editing in cui strati di materiale, forme, linee e colori vengono prima sovrapposti, poi grattati via, nascosti e poi scoperti. L’artista si basa sul concetto di pentimento che si riferisce ad un'alterazione ben evidente delle tracce del segno che aveva precedentemente eseguito, scoprendo i cambiamenti e ripensamenti apportati durante il processo di pittura. In questo modo Mapes esamina come i processi mentali possono essere trasmessi su tela.

Lindsay Mapes (Stati Uniti, 1977) ha conseguito il BFA presso San Francisco Art Institute, il Post-Bac presso Studio Arts College International in Florence, il MFA presso Slade University College di Londra. Vive e lavora tra Londra e Firenze.
