Comunicato stampa

Primo Marella Gallery is pleased to present Echoes of Power, a solo exhibition by Nigerian artist Kelechi Nwaneri, opening on Thursday, January 22 at 6 pm in Milan.

Nigerian artist Kelechi Nwaneri situates his iconic figures in the past to narrate events that have helped shape the current geopolitical landscape of his home country, Nigeria. The episodes depicted in many of these scenes carry a force that resonates through time, continuing to influence reality long after they occurred.

Driven by an urgency to document history – especially in a rapidly changing world where the past is obscured, truth denied, and where each day we are left with only fragments of the traces that brought us here as a people – Nwaneri seeks not only to introduce international audiences to aspects of Nigerian history, but also to remind the Nigerian public (particularly as the atmosphere of the upcoming elections clouds the horizon) of the sacrifices and events that gave birth to the nation and to the democracy we now enjoy: the tensions and displacements of war, our strength in unity, and the ways in which we have consistently resisted the true oppressor.

Since the artist describes this production of works as a concise, chronological attempt to guide viewers through history using painting, Echoes of Power invites to preserve and reinterpret the legacies of the past, and how art can shape new readings of the present.

PROJECT ROOM
on view at Primo Marella Gallery Milano
opening on January 22, 2026 at 6 pm

In conjunction with the main exhibition, we are delighted to inform you that at our Milan venue will be on view a special Project Room entirely dedicated to dedicated to showcasing Recent Works by Rangga Aputra.

The exhibition brings together a new series of paintings that further the artist’s exploration of color stratification and materiality. Through a well-established painterly technique – distinguished by the richness and tactile quality of materials such as dense acrylic or oil paint, structuring gel, and linen – the irregularity and apparent absurdity of forms have undergone a clear process of evolution. Rangga’s paintings are grounded in a creative process of assimilation and almost mathematical reworking, born of an extended and, above all, meditative period of work. Over this span of time, stimuli from the surrounding environment gradually permeate the brushstrokes and imprint themselves onto the surface of the canvas.

It is precisely at this liminal point – between figuration and abstraction, between the two-dimensionality of the canvas and the three-dimensionality of form – that Rangga Aputra’s process appears guided by a universal aura, a silent force that binds us to one another and that, for the artist, takes shape through an intimate and ongoing dialogue with nature.

We look forward to present to the public once again the dense and vital painting practice of Rangga Aputra!
