Karen Yurkovich è un’artista canadese che lavora tra Vancouver, in Canada, e Firenze. Una parte significativa della sua pratica artistica riguarda il rapporto tra cultura e natura. I suoi lavori affrontano i molti modi in cui natura e umanità co-esistono e co-evolvono, e difatti i suoi quadri integrano ed interpretano categorie e modalità di rappresentazione di matrice scientifica. Splendidi, iconici e fragile, questi lavori sono ibridi, dove elementi incongruenti convivono ed i rapporti si fanno testuali, come suggerito dai loro titoli. Karen è Direttrice del Corso Master in Belle Arti presso Studio Art Centers International a Firenze, ed ha insegnato anche presso la ECUAD. Suoi lavori sono stati inclusi nel programma della Vision TV “Re-creating Eden”, organizzato in collaborazione con l’associazione per la biodiversità Archeologia Arborea. I suoi progetti attuali includono lavori per Beauty Centre e per il Museo per la Biodiversità dell’Università della British Columbia. Ha partecipato a mostre in importanti gallerie nazionali ed internazionali, tra cui la Kunsthaus Merano, ed il Flash Art Museum in Italia.

I quadri ed i documenti costituenti questa mostra, da considerarsi una sorta di “cantiere aperto”, saranno incentrati attorno a tre corpi di lavoro principali ed includeranno degli esemplari di opere e documenti appartenenti ai suoi progetti più recenti per Beauty Center e per il Museo per la Biodiversità dell’Università della British Columbia a Vancouver, nonchè per il Giardino Botanico di quest’ultima. Verrà anche mostrato un esempio del suo lavoro in Italia con l’associazione per la biodiversità, Archeologia Arborea, la cui sede è situata in Umbria.

PROGETTO ERBARIO - Questi quadri esplorano l’idea di un Erbario, le tipologie tassonomiche e le dimensioni e decisioni estetiche relative a questi tipi di collezioni. Tentano perciò di generare nuove tassonomie basate sulle dimensioni culturali e storiche delle piante, combinando varietà autoctone con esemplari esotici.

CULTURA DA GIARDINO - Questi lavori affrontano i diversi strati del significato culturale delle piante e dei rapporti tra queste e le storie delle persone che vi interagiscono. Molti di questi lavori sono basati su specie di mele trovate al Festival delle Mele dell’Università della British Columbia e coltivate nella regione stessa. Includono sia varietà ereditate, la cui storia è ben nota, che esemplari creati e cresciuti nella provincia in questione. I quadri danno vita a narrazioni attraverso la storia, la mitologia, gli usi comuni, gli aspetti botanici, il simbolismo e l’aspetto fisico delle diverse piante e mele usate.

FRUTTA DIMENTICATA - Un lancio del dado evoluzionario; dalle antiche varietà di frutta, piccole, imperfette e quasi non commestibili, siamo giunti agli esemplari enormi, succulenti e perfetti di oggi. Quanta parte dell’evoluzione è una scelta consapevole? Questa serie di lavori è ispirata dalla collaborazione/amicizia con Isabella Dalla Ragione, fondatrice di Archeologia Arborea in Umbria. L’associazione è impegnata nella preservazione di specie di frutta antiche e in via di scomparsa, e della documentazione delle tradizioni culturali che sorsero attorno a tali colture frutticole.

KAREN YURKOVICH: Cultural Biodiversity Projects

Karen Yurkovich is a Canadian artist working between Vancouver, Canada and Florence, Italy. An integral part of her artistic practice concerns the relationship between culture and nature. Her work addresses the many ways in which nature and humanity have co-existed and co-evolved and her paintings integrate and interpret scientific categories and modes of representation. Beautiful, iconic and fragile, they are hybrids, where incongruent elements exist together and relationships become textual, as hinted at in the titles. She is Director of the MFA program at Studio Art Centers International, Florence and has also taught at ECUAD. Her work has been included in the Vision TV program “Re-creating Eden” with the Italian biodiversity association Archeologia Arborea. Current projects include work with the Beaty Centre and Museum for Biodiversity, University of Britsh Columbia. She has shown nationally and internationally including the Kunsthaus Merano, and the Flash Art Museum, Italy.

Paintings and documentation for this "work in progress" exhibition will centralize around three main bodies of work and will include a sampling of works and documents from her most recent projects with the Beaty Center and Museum for Biodiversity UBC in Vancouver as well as the Botanical Garden at UBC. Included will also be an example from her work in Italy with the biodiversity association, Archeologia Arborea, based in Umbria.

HERBARIUM PROJECT - These paintings explore the idea of an Herbarium, types of taxonomy and the ultimate aesthetic dimensions and decisions of such collections. They attempt to create new taxonomies based on the cultural and historical dimensions of the plants, mixing autochthonous varieties with exotic ones.

GARDEN CULTURE - The work seeks to address the diverse strata of the cultural significance of plants and their relationships to the broader histories of the peoples who interact with them. Several are based on the apple varieties found at the UBC Apple Festival 2012 and cultivated in the province of BC. They include both heritage varieties with known histories and those developed in the province. The paintings tell stories using the history, mythology, uses, botanical aspects, symbolism and appearance of the different plants and apples.

FORGOTTEN FRUIT - A tossing of the evolutionary dice; from the ancient varieties, small, imperfect and almost inedible in the raw state to the large, juicy, perfect specimens of today. How much of evolution is now a conscious choice? This series of work is inspired by a collaboration and friendship with Isabella Dalla Ragione, founder of Archeologia Arborea, (Arboreal Archeology) in Umbria, Italy. The Association is dedicated to the preservation of ancient and disappearing fruiting plant varieties, and the documentation of the cultural traditions that arose around this fruiticulture.
