La Galleria Valentina Bonomo e la Galleria Alessandra Bonomo sono liete di annunciare l’apertura della mostra personale di James H.D. Brown I WANT TO KNOW, in collaborazione con The James and Alexandra Brown Estate, che si inaugura il 27 maggio 2025 dalle ore 18 alle ore 21 presso le rispettive sedi in via del Portico d’Ottavia 13 e in via del Gesù 62 a Roma.
James H.D. Brown (Los Angeles, 1951 - Città del Messico, 2020) è un artista statunitense noto per i suoi dipinti che esplorano il confine tra figurazione e astrazione, fondendo motivi tratti dalla tradizione modernista con immagini e temi ispirati alla cultura primitiva.
Il titolo della mostra, I WANT TO KNOW, richiama una frase che Brown era solito ripetere durante le attività quotidiane, esprimendo così la sua costante tensione verso l’ignoto e la scoperta.
Il progetto è dedicato alla serie My Other House un ciclo che include l’ultima e inedita produzione dell’artista. La serie prende forma nel 2009, durante il soggiorno di Brown nell’ex Hacienda Aranjuez, nei pressi di Oaxaca, in Messico. In quell’occasione i suoi figli scoprirono una stanza nascosta, da loro poi rinominata “my other house”. L’artista identificò questo luogo come una potente metafora della sua mente creativa, divenendo per lui uno spazio privato, sospeso, in cui esplorare mitologie personali, figure simboliche e architetture visionarie.
Le opere di My Other House sono realizzate attraverso l’uso di riviste d’epoca recuperate a Parigi, e combinano pittura, collage e forme ovali. Ne emergono paesaggi interiori abitati da rose, cristalli, porcellane e frammenti di oggetti dell’Art Brut. Un universo dove convivono ordine e caos, guidati da un equilibrio istintivo e poetico. L’opera di Brown si nutre di molteplici riferimenti culturali ed etnografici, riflettendo l’esperienza di una vita vissuta tra mondi e geografie diverse.
Molte delle opere esposte sono state realizzate nel 2019, durante un mese di residenza nello studio di Cy Twombly a Bassano in Teverina (VT), dove Brown ha soggiornato insieme alla moglie Alexandra. Le opere furono concepite appositamente per gli spazi espositivi delle gallerie Bonomo, con cui l’artista intratteneva un rapporto consolidato, nato dalla storica collaborazione con la Galleria Marilena Bonomo di Bari a partire dagli anni Ottanta. L’allestimento delle due mostre è stato curato rispettando la disposizione originale ideata dall’artista rievocando così l’atmosfera intima e immersiva di quel periodo creativo.
My Other House è stata esposta a livello internazionale, tra cui al Museo Diego Rivera–Anahuacalli (Città del Messico, 2013), allo USC Fisher Museum of Art (Los Angeles, 2017) nell’ambito del Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, alla Galería Hilario Galguera (Città del Messico) e alla Galerie Karsten Greve (Parigi).

Galleria Valentina Bonomo and Galleria Alessandra Bonomo, in collaboration with The James and Alexandra Brown Estate, present I WANT TO KNOW, an exhibition dedicated to James Brown’s My Other House series. The exhibition opens on May 27, 2025, from 6 PM to 9 PM, across the two gallery spaces: Via del Portico d’Ottavia 13 and Via del Gesù 62, in Rome.
James H.D. Brown (Los Angeles, 1951 – Mexico City, 2020) was an American artist known for his paintings that navigate the boundary between figuration and abstraction, blending motifs rooted in modernist tradition with imagery and themes inspired by so-called “primitive” cultures.
The exhibition’s title, I WANT TO KNOW, echoes a phrase Brown often repeated in his daily life—an expression of his enduring curiosity and quest for the unknown.
The project focuses on the series My Other House, which includes the artist’s final and previously unseen body of work. The series originated in 2009, during Brown’s time at the former Hacienda Aranjuez near Oaxaca, Mexico. There, his children discovered a hidden room they named “my other house.” Brown saw this space as a powerful metaphor for the creative mind: a private, suspended realm in which to explore personal mythologies, symbolic figures, and visionary architectures.
The works in My Other House were created using vintage magazines sourced in Paris and combine painting, collage, and oval formats. The resulting inner landscapes are inhabited by roses, crystals, porcelain objects, and fragments of Art Brut design—a universe where order and chaos coexist, guided by an instinctive and poetic balance. Brown’s practice draws on a wide range of cultural and ethnographic references, shaped by a life lived across many geographies and cultural contexts.
Many of the works on view were created in 2019 during a one-month residency at Cy Twombly’s studio in Bassano in Teverina near Viterbo, where Brown worked alongside his wife, Alexandra Brown. Conceived specifically for the exhibition spaces of the Bonomo galleries, the works continue a long-standing relationship between the artist and the Bonomo family, which began in the 1980s through his collaboration with Galleria Marilena Bonomo in Bari. The exhibition layout respects the original arrangement envisioned by the artist during his time in Twombly’s studio, evoking the intimate and immersive atmosphere of that creative period.
My Other House has been previously exhibited internationally, including at the Museo Diego Rivera–Anahuacalli (Mexico City, 2013), the USC Fisher Museum of Art (Los Angeles, 2017) as part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, Galería Hilario Galguera (Mexico City), and Galerie Karsten Greve (Paris).
