"While in Guangzhou, China for a month.
Jacopo Benassi gets under the skin of a metropolis with over a 120 million souls. Loving the flesh, spirit, and the schizophrenia of the “world’s factory”. The geography of the city is a map of bodies, skyscrapers and abandon – an urban fabric where sprawl, jungle and steel intertwine."
CARico MAssimo presents an exclusive exhibition of the Italian photographer Jacopo Benassi, “MEIWO a concept for a book made in Guangzhou, China”: a photographic self-portrait born from the experience of the artist in the city of flowers. As part of his every day routine there Benassi worked as if a photographic book of his pictures were published each day. He took pictures, edited and selected them all night long every night, to create an imaginary, yet real, lay out. Once back in Europe, Benassi did not make any changes to this narrative work. Every decision he made in China remained the same, without any alteration. The choices he made day after day in the Far East, have not been changed by the post-Guangzho Benassi. The exhibition is, from this point of view, a diary. The work came to an end the same day he left China. Each shot presented in this exhibition is inextricably linked to that specific place and time of the artist’s life, fragments of a far city transported and presented here. An exhibition about a book in search of a publisher.
