Antonio Colombo è lieto di presentare Vicious, la nuova mostra personale di Gary Baseman, in cui saranno esposte una trentina nuove opere: 14 dipinti su tela, 4 dipinti eseguiti su copertine di libri d’epoca e 8 disegni realizzati su pagine di vecchi libri di Medicina.

Si tratta di opere create appositamente per l’occasione, in cui compaiono per la prima volta nuovi personaggi, che arricchiscono l’immaginario fantastico dell’artista statunitense.

La mostra è incentrata sul tema della “fame”, un istinto primario che riflette il lato bestiale presente in ogni uomo. Ma di cosa sono affamate le nuove e curiose creature zannute inventate da Baseman?

“In fondo, esse non cercano altro che amore e affetto”- afferma l’artista - “ma la loro fame è così grande da trasformarsi in ferocia”.

I nuovi dipinti e i disegni della serie “Vicious” si dividono in due categorie, da una parte i paesaggi e dall’altra i ritratti di ragazze con bizzarre creature pelose.

I paesaggi mostrano una sorta di convergenza lirica di personaggi, intenti a giocare, ballare e galleggiare in uno stato ipnotico simile al sogno.

Alcuni nuovi dipinti rappresentano episodi, in cui non è chiaro se le creature pelose stiano giocando innocentemente con le ragazze o se stiano piuttosto lottando ferocemente con loro. Quelle dipinte da Baseman sono, infatti, immagini inafferrabili e ambigue, che descrivono eventi, situazioni e circostanze enigmatiche, aperte a molteplici interpretazioni.

Artista poliedrico, illustratore, designer e autore del famoso cartone animato Disney Teacher’s Pet, vincitore di tre Emmy Awards, Gary Baseman è considerato una delle figure di spicco della scena Pop Surrealista californiana, caratterizzata dalla contaminazione tra arte e cultura pop.

Baseman ha iniziato la sua carriera a New York tra la seconda metà degli anni Ottanta e la prima metà degli anni Novanta, collaborando come illustratore con The New Yorker, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Time, Clutter Magazine, Atlantic Monthly e The Los Angeles Times.

Ritornato in California, Baseman si è dedicato all’esplorazione di diverse forme di ibridazione tra arte, moda, pubblicità, design, musica e cinema e ha coniato il termine “Pervasive Art” per definire la sua estetica, capace di “offuscare la linea di confine tra Fine Art e Commercial Art”.

Con la sua pittura, in cui sono presenti influssi dei cartoni animati vintage della Warner Bros e della Disney, ma anche l’attitudine critica e concettuale del fumetto underground, Baseman ha creato un universo fantastico popolato da bizzarre creature, personaggi come Toby, Dumb Luck, ChouChou e Hotchachacha, una schiera di alter ego dell’artista, che incarnano anche i sentimenti inespressi, le emozioni inconfessabili e le segrete pulsioni che ogni uomo prova nei confronti del mondo femminile. Le donne, sono infatti il fulcro attorno al quale ruotano le visioni di Baseman, spesso incentrate sulla conflittualità tra bene e male, amore e morte, gioia e dolore nell’esperienza umana.

Inserito dal Entertainment Weekly magazine tra le 100 persone più influenti del mondo dell’”intrattenimento”, Gary Baseman ha esposto i suoi dipinti in musei e gallerie in tutto il mondo ed ha conquistato una vasta schiera di appassionati grazie alla creazione di vinyl toys, borse, cappelli, stampe e altri prodotti per il mercato di massa. Oltre alla già citata serie a cartoni animati Teacher’s Pet, trasmessa dalla ABC tra il 2000 e il 2002, e divenuta nel 2004 una pellicola per le sale cinematografiche, Gary Baseman ha creato, insieme a un gruppo di designer, Cranium, un gioco da tavolo molto popolare in America.

Antonio Colombo is proud to present Vicious, the new solo show by Gary Baseman, containing about thirty new works: 14 paintings on canvas, 4 paintings done on old book covers, and 8 drawings made on pages from old medical textbooks.

These works have been created specifically for this show, and they include new characters for the first time, new personalities in the rich fantasy imagery of the American artist.

The exhibition focuses on “hunger” as a basic instinct that reflects the animal that exists in every human being. But what are the new, curious toothy creatures invented by Baseman hungry for?

“Basically, they only want some love and affection – the artist says – but their hunger is so great that it is transformed into viciousness”.

The new paintings and drawings of the “Vicious” series can be divided into categories: landscapes, on the one hand, and portraits of girls with bizarre hairy creatures, on the other.

The landscapes show a sort of lyrical gathering of characters bent on playing, dancing and floating in a hypnotic dreamlike state.

Some of the new paintings represent episodes in which it is not clear if the furry creatures are innocently playing with the girls or ferociously fighting with them. The images Baseman paints, in fact, are hard to grasp, ambiguous. They describe enigmatic events, situations and circumstances, open to multiple interpretations.

A versatile artist, illustrator, designer and author of the famous Disney cartoon Teacher’s Pet, winner of three Emmy Awards, Gary Baseman is considered one of the outstanding figures of the Pop Surrealist scene in California, marked by the contamination between art and popular culture.

Baseman began his career in New York in the second half of the Eighties and the early Nineties, working as an illustrator with The New Yorker, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Time, Clutter Magazine, Atlantic Monthly and The Los Angeles Times.

After returning to California, Baseman focused on exploration of different hybrids between art, fashion, advertising, design, music and cinema, and coined the term “Pervasive Art” to define his aesthetic, capable of “blurring the boundaries between Fine Art and Commercial Art”.

With his painting, influenced by vintage cartoons of Warner Bros and Disney, but also by the critical and conceptual attitudes of underground comics, Baseman has created a fantasy universe inhabited by bizarre creatures, characters like Toby, Dumb Luck, ChouChou and Hotchachacha, alter egos of the artist that also embody unexpressed feelings, the inadmissible emotions and secret impulses every man feels with respect to the feminine world. Women, in fact, are the fulcrum around which Baseman’s visions rotate, often focusing on the conflict between good and evil, love and death, joy and suffering in human experience.

Included by Entertainment Weekly in the list of the 100 most creative people in the world of “entertainment”, Gary Baseman has shown paintings in museums and galleries all over the world, and gained a vast number of fans thanks to his vinyl toys, handbags, hats, prints and other mass-market products. Besides the Teacher’s Pet series broadcast by ABC in 2000-02, which become a movie in 2004, together with a group of designers Gary Baseman has also created Cranium, a board game that is very popular in America.
