For Focus on 2025, the series of in-depth studies dedicated to site-specific projects, Vistamare is pleased to present OUTER by Roberto Cattivelli.
Cattivelli's work is conceived in series that bear the same title but include different subjects linked together conceptually. The non-descriptive yet evocative titles of each series - Border, Grace, Idiots - do not provide a key to interpretation, but suggest further levels of meaning.
Painting becomes an instrument of investigation, offering itself to contemplation as a revelation: “The works are my attempts to grasp the essence of reality. I try to isolate small fragments of reality to get to know it”.
In his oil paintings, fragments from the animal and human world surface as unveiled secrets. The images reveal themselves gradually through the overlapping of layers of black color alone, as in a slow slide into darkness. In night vision, the retina needs time to adapt in order to distinguish objects. Initially, it perceives only brighter objects and then darker ones. When facing Cattivelli's paintings, we are required to linger with our eyes for a long time to catch all the details. To the artist each detail is of equal importance, including empty spaces. The more details are revealed - the clear parts are given by the white of the canvas, so they literally emerge from the background - the more an abstract idea of reality drifts away. Cattivelli's painting does not have a hyperrealist intent, though, but rather a quest for a spiritual dimension. The artist has declared a desire to confront the sacred, not in a religious sense, but as "absolute ambiguity where grace and terror converge".
Roberto Cattivelli was born in 1979 in Piacenza, where he lives and works.
His research focuses equally on painting and drawing as a form of visual and inner exploration. Subjects are often chosen instinctively and based on personal experience. This is tied to his need to investigate reality, which he represents with great accuracy in terms of detail. In painting, these details emerge from layers of black, while in drawing, they are rendered in graphite on a white background. Il lavoro di Cattivelli è concepito in serie che portano lo stesso titolo ma comprendono soggetti diversi, legati tra loro concettualmente. I titoli evocativi e non descrittivi di ciascuna serie - Border, Grace, Idiots - più che fornire una chiave interpretativa, suggeriscono ulteriori livelli di lettura.
La pittura diviene strumento di indagine e si offre alla contemplazione come una rivelazione: “Le opere sono tentativi di afferrare la sostanza della realtà. Cerco di isolarne piccoli frammenti per conoscerla”.
Nei suoi dipinti ad olio, frammenti del mondo animale e umano affiorano come segreti svelati. Le immagini si rivelano poco a poco, attraverso una sovrapposizione di velature del solo colore nero, come in una immersione graduale nel buio. Nella visione notturna, la retina necessita di un tempo di adattamento per distinguere gli oggetti, percependo inizialmente solo quelli più luminosi e a seguire quelli più scuri. Di fronte ai quadri di Cattivelli siamo tenuti a soffermarci a lungo con lo sguardo per coglierne tutti i particolari. Per l’artista ciascuno di essi ha la stessa importanza, inclusi gli spazi vuoti. Più si svelano i dettagli - le parti chiare sono date dal bianco della tela, quindi emergono letteralmente dal fondo - e più ci si allontana da una idea astratta della realtà. Nella pittura di Cattivelli non c’è però una intenzione iperrealista, ma piuttosto l’aspirazione ad una dimensione spirituale. L'artista ha dichiarato il desiderio di confrontarsi con il sacro, non in senso religioso, ma come “ambiguità assoluta in cui grazia e terrore si fondono”.
Roberto Cattivelli è nato nel 1979 a Piacenza, dove vive e lavora.
La sua ricerca si concentra in egual misura sulla pittura e sul disegno, praticate come un’indagine visiva e interiore. La scelta dei soggetti, spesso istintiva e di origine personale, è legata all’esigenza di investigare la realtà, rappresentata con grande cura per i dettagli, che in pittura emergono da stratificazioni di nero, mentre nel disegno sono restituiti dalla grafite sul fondo bianco. Cattivelli ha esposto in mostre personali e collettive tra cui: Why we Paint?, da un’idea di Francesco Bonami e a cura di Stefano Collicelli Cagol e SUN MAN, BY ART MATTERS Foundation, Hangzhou, Cina (2025); Teatrum Botanicum 2016, PAV Parco Arte Vivente Torino, Italia (2016); La Saletta, Fondazione d’Arte Erich Lindenberg, Lugano, Svizzera (2015).
