A fuoco, fuori luce

L’alternarsi del giorno alla notte, l’aprirsi e il chiudersi delle palpebre. L’affiorare di dettagli altrimenti invisibili, la ricerca dell’ombra per gioire di un po’ di frescura nascondendosi al sole. L’instancabile dinamismo degli esseri viventi. La si consideri dal punto di vista che si preferisce, ma quell’onda elettromagnetica che corre velocissima nel vuoto rende continuamente manifesto il suo imprescindibile ruolo in avvicendamenti, variazioni, movimenti. La luce è ritmo. Possiamo riconoscerlo nelle dinamiche della natura e rilevarlo con taluni artifici, in particolare con la fotografia. Un andamento ben noto alla fotografa Claudia Corrent che con il progetto All’ombra simile o a un sogno si è cimentata nell’impresa di riuscire a rendere visibile quel ritmo lasciandosi ispirare da un passo dell’Odissea in cui Ulisse, sceso nell’Ade, incontra l’ombra della madre e prova per tre volte ad abbracciarla ma senza successo poiché lei è ormai eterea.

A interessare Corrent è tanto l’irregolarità di quella presenza quanto l’immediato rinvio alla dimensione onirica, tipicamente intangibile seppure intensa ma non necessariamente nitida; spesso, infatti, dei sogni si rimembrano frammenti lontani e sfocati, se non persino la completa assenza di qualsiasi dettaglio. Dunque, come porsi rispetto a quel ritmo? La risposta Corrent non la dà, ma lascia che si possa riconoscere una condizione decisiva che contraddistingue le sue fotografie: più siamo inclini a dire si tratti di ombre, più dovremo ammettere che comunque qualcosa lo stiamo vedendo. Ed ecco il punto che Corrent ci invita a considerare: va così poiché non possiamo discorrere solo del buio, bensì altrettanto della luce.

Im Fokus, außerhalb des Lichts

Der Wechsel von Tag und Nacht, das Öffnen und Schließen der Augenlider. Das Hervortreten ansonsten unsichtbarer Details, die Suche nach Schatten, um ein wenig Frische zu genießen, indem man sich vor der Sonne verbirgt. Die unermüdliche Dynamik der Lebewesen. Man kann es aus jeder beliebigen Perspektive betrachten, doch jene elektromagnetische Welle, die mit höchster Geschwindigkeit durch das Vakuum rast, macht fortwährend ihre unverzichtbare Rolle in Abfolgen, Variationen und Bewegungen offenbar. Licht ist Rhythmus. Wir können ihn in den Dynamiken der Natur erkennen und ihn durch bestimmte Mittel erfassen, insbesondere durch die Fotografie. Ein Verlauf, der der Fotografin Claudia Corrent wohlvertraut ist, die sich mit der Bildserie All’ombra simile o a un sogno der Aufgabe stellt, diesen Rhythmus sichtbar zu machen, indem sie sich von einer Passage der Odyssee inspirieren ließ, in der Odysseus, in den Hades hinabgestiegen, dem Schatten seiner Mutter begegnet und dreimal versucht, sie zu umarmen, jedoch ohne Erfolg, da sie nunmehr ätherisch ist.

Was Corrent interessiert, ist sowohl die Unregelmäßigkeit dieser Präsenz als auch der unmittelbare Verweis auf die traumhafte Dimension – typischerweise ungreifbar, wenn auch intensiv, jedoch nicht notwendigerweise deutlich; denn oft erinnert man sich an Träume in fernen, verschwommenen Fragmenten oder gar an das vollständige Fehlen jeglicher Details. Wie also soll man sich zu diesem Rhythmus verhalten? Corrent gibt darauf keine Antwort, sondern lässt vielmehr eine entscheidende Bedingung erkennen, die ihre Fotografien kennzeichnet: Je stärker wir geneigt sind zu sagen, es handle sich um Schatten, desto mehr müssen wir eingestehen, dass wir dennoch etwas sehen. Und genau hier liegt der Punkt, zu dessen Betrachtung Corrent uns einlädt: Das ist so, weil wir nicht nur vom Dunkel sprechen können, sondern ebenso vom Licht.

In Focus, Out of Light

The alternation of day and night, the opening and closing of eyelids. The surfacing of details otherwise invisible, the search for shade in order to enjoy a bit of coolness while hiding from the sun. The tireless dynamism of living beings. One may consider it from whichever point of view one prefers, but that electromagnetic wave racing swiftly through the void continually makes manifest its indispensable role in alternations, variations, movements. Light is rhythm. We can recognize it in the dynamics of nature and detect it through certain devices, photography in particular. A pattern well known to the photographer Claudia Corrent, who with the project All'ombra simile o a un sogno has taken on the challenge of making that rhythm visible, drawing inspiration from a passage in the Odyssey in which Ulysses, having descended into Hades, encounters the shade of his mother and tries three times to embrace her, without success, since she is now ethereal.

What interests Corrent is both the irregularity of that presence and its immediate reference to the dreamlike dimension—typically intangible yet intense, though not necessarily clear; indeed, one often recalls dreams as distant, blurred fragments, if not as a complete absence of any detail. So how should one position oneself with respect to that rhythm? Corrent does not provide an answer, but instead allows a decisive condition that distinguishes her photographs to emerge: the more inclined we are to say that what we see are shadows, the more we must admit that we are nonetheless seeing something. And here lies the point Corrent invites us to consider: this happens because we cannot speak only of darkness, but equally of light.
