Vaghi racconti servono a riempire parzialmente lacune storiche.

English

To claim to know one's ancestors requires a deception which brings comfort: It is in this light that Christina Thwaites presents 'Postmen in East Hull' (2012) a painting of her Great-Great Grandfather, a post master who worked in the north of England in the early 20th Century.

A few photos, some scattered mementos. Army memorabilia, old stamps – often worthless, aside from a sentimental value: these are the sum of our predecessors. Although even these few pictures and objects, such as a photograph of a long deceased grandparent's wedding, or the remains of a coin collection, do little to piece together one's prehistory. Vague accounts serve to loosely fill the huge gaps. Stories passed down over generations. Even where a story can be verified by asking someone involved, doubt persists as to the factual accuracy of the account, as memory fogs and embellishes reality.

In exploring her own genealogy, Thwaites takes a photograph – by now an archaic object in itself – and interprets it in paint. This recasting of experience is not aimed at a perfect visual re-interpretation of a photograph. Rather, the artist explores the physicality of painting, which allows for a loss of control, leading to accidents and unexpected results.

The artist speaks of the familiar faces she sees in the pictures of her forebears, giving a sense of traversing her finite experience – even if the pictures themselves speak of an inevitable passing of time, and of successive lives. It is through a mixture of reflection, physical interaction with paint, and observation – of the details, the clothing, the mannerisms – that Thwaites conjures a deception which is at art's core: the ability to designate this or that 'thing' as worthy of attention.

Armless mannequins, men in dresses, boys with guns, screaming babies, goats and hanging dolls... these are things which jump out and ask to be studied more closely. Here, in Postmen in East Hull the element of chance, together with a loose handling of paint, contributes an ethereality, which alongside the materiality of the work, returns the viewer to the reality of it being a painting, something made, something ultimately incapable of transcending the historical gap between now and the past. The postmen are forgotten, the letters they delivered rest, in large, in the soil with them. The artist is left with no option but to set to work again. A perpetual physical involvement leaving new traces.
