ANDERS HERWALD RUHWALD
The body, the mind, the constructed world
opening Tuesday 17th July 6.30pm
Casa Museo Jorn, Albissola Marina
The solo exhibition by Anders Herwald Ruhwald - The Body, the Mind, the Constructed World - will be open from 17 July to 30 September at the Jorn House Museum in Albissola Marina. Together with the Milanese preview - The Thing in your mind - organised by Officine Saffi in April 2018, the exhibition in Albissola is the first Italian public exhibition by the Danish artist currently residing in the USA.
Colour, shape and function are just three of the main lines of research which Ruhwald examined over a period of one year (2017), before creating twelve sculptures designed in a dialogue with the highly imaginative architecture of Jorn’s house. Among the many qualities which characterise the research of the artist, has to be highlighted his ability to explore the changeable forms of sculpture in relation to the environment, at the same time activating a conceptual process tied to semantic displacement, medial short-circuiting and a reflective examination of the spectator. Compared to the legacy of previous artistic movements which certainly influenced Ruhwald’s work (above all minimalism), he does not renounce a shape-colour aesthetics which is firmly contended between voluptuousness and the scatological. He has most certainly been influenced by his education in both his native Denmark and in London, as well as his definitive move to Detroit in the United States, where he has held the role of director of the Department of Ceramics at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Anders Ruhwald is one of the one hundred artists included in the Phaidon book Vitamin C (2017), a publication which, similarly to the previous volumes dedicated to other important themes regarding contemporary art, acknowledges “a global examination of the most important artists currently working with clay and ceramics”. The exhibition, curated by the artistic director of the Jorn House Museum, Luca Bochicchio, has been produced by Officine Saffi with the support of the Danish Arts Foundation, the patronage of the Municipality of Albissola Marina, and the contribution of the Amici di Casa Jorn [Friends of Casa Jorn] Association.
