MASSIMODECARLO is pleased to present Old Vessels, New Spirits, a group exhibition that brings contemporary artists into dialogue with figurative masters of the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibition explores how historical forms persist as living frameworks for new expression and unexpected affinities.

This exhibition continues a curatorial trajectory central to MASSIMODECARLO’s programme. From Nature Knows No Pause (2018), which traced how artists from the 19th century onward engaged with landscape and natural forces, to MCMXXXIV (2019), pairing contemporary voices with sculptors of the 1930s, and Portraiture One Century Apart (2021), exploring shifts in the depiction of the figure - Old Vessels, New Spirits brings together artists separated by decades or centuries who speak a similar visual language.

The exhibition’s historical anchor includes works by Pierre Bonnard, Edgar Degas, Charles Despiau, Norbert Goeneutte, Antoine-Jean Gros, Winslow Homer, Albert Marquet, and Andrew Wyeth.
