Noire Gallery is pleased to present Magico Vento, the first solo exhibition in Italy by Francesco Igory Deiana, an Italian artist based in New York. Francesco Igory Deiana’s practice begins with the use of a single line. Working primarily with traditional techniques such as graphite, ballpoint pen, wax pastel, and latex paint, the artist meticulously constructs works that document the performative gesture of drawing in a style that evokes both the dynamism of Futurism and the bold, immobile structures of Brutalist architecture. The series of paintings on view focuses on the theme of the cigarette, interpreted through an abstract and painterly language. Born out of the urgency to translate an intense psychic pressure into form, composition, and color, the artist’s research develops into works that evoke the American West after 1865, blending historical events with supernatural elements. From this emerge reflections on universal issues such as prejudice, the clash of civilizations, and the power of the human mind. The ritual subject of the cigarette becomes an opportunity for symbolic and historical investigation. As the artist recalls: “Tobacco was originally used in sacred rituals by Native American peoples as a means of communicating with the divine and for healing. Thus, through the exploration of the formal stress of the cigarette, I rediscover an ancient peace.” The works invite slow and attentive observation, revealing the delicacy of the creative process and the complexity of the forms that compose them. The viewer is thus guided to perceive both their evocative power and their refined material quality.
