Con Ghosts and UFOs; Projections for Well-Lit Spaces, personale dell’artista Tom Friedman, apre a Milano Vistamarestudio da un’idea di Benedetta Spalletti e Lodovica Busiri Vici.

La nuova sede progettata dallo studio newyorchese Space4Architecture - S4A è uno spazio neutrale caratterizzato dal rigore delle architetture senza ostacoli alla vista: protagoniste sono le opere.

L’artista americano presenta una serie di lavori che segnano un nuovo inizio nella sua ricerca sulla smaterializzazione dell’oggetto tangibile in relazione a spazio e luce. In mostra tredici proiezioni video installate in uno spazio illuminato a giorno che svelano vuoto e pieno, micro e macro invitando lo spettatore ad un approccio sensoriale nuovo. Il progetto nasce dall’osservazione della luce del sole attraverso le finestre in momenti diversi della giornata. Ogni lavoro è in loop con una diversa durata: si passa dal silenzio statico, dall’immobilità all’apparizione di oggetti, colori e figure che, come allucinazioni, confondono chi osserva e si fondono con l’ambiente.

Tom Friedman espande così il suo vocabolario visivo e continua l’indagine sui fenomeni dell’esperienza che capovolge la consapevolezza del visibile.

Tom Friedman è un artista concettuale americano, nato a Saint Louis (1965) Missouri. Vive e lavora in Massachusetts.

La sua ricerca parte da un approccio unico e dall’utilizzo di materiali e oggetti del quotidiano, come polistirolo espanso, matite, carta, spaghetti e bicchieri di plastica, investigando la relazione tra il fare arte e la psicologia della percezione dell’arte. Come uno scienziato impegnato nello studio di fenomeni empirici e non e delle infinite referenze di un oggetto, ne analizza le impercettibili trasformazioni.

Il suo lavoro è stato esposto in tutto il mondo: Museum of Modern Art, Moma, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; Fondazione Prada, Milano; New Museum of Contemporary art, New York; Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall; Tel Aviv Museum of Art; South London Gallery; Mead Art Museum e numerose altre istituzioni.

Vistamarestudio, a new exhibition space conceived by Lodovica Busiri Vici and Benedetta Spalletti, is pleased to present as its first show the exhibition Ghosts and UFOs; Projections for Well-Lit Spaces by Tom Friedman.

Designed by the New York studio Space4Architecture - S4A, the space is a neutral. Its architecture is clear, precise and without obstructions, making the artworks central.

The American artist, Tom Friedman, presents a series of works that mark a new beginning in his ongoing research around the dematerialization of the tangible object in relation to space and light. Thirteen video projections installed in a space illuminated by daylight appear empty and full, micro and macro, inviting the viewer to a new sensorial approach. The project emerged from an observation of the sunlight shining through the windows at different times of the day. Each work is in loop with a different duration. We pass from static silence and stillness to the appearance of objects, colors and figures that, like hallucinations, confuse observers and blend with the environment. Tom Friedman thus expands his visual vocabulary and continues the investigation of the phenomena of experience that overturns awareness of the visible.

Tom Friedman is an American conceptual artist, born in Saint Louis (1965), Missouri. Lives and works in Massachusetts.
His research starts from a unique approach and from the use of everyday materials and objects, such as styrofoam, pencils, paper, spaghetti and plastic cups, in an investigation of the relation between art making and the psychology of the perception of art. As a scientist engaged in the study of empirical and non-empirical phenomena and the infinite references of an object, he analyzes its imperceptible transformations.

His work has been exhibited all over the world: Museum of Modern Art, Moma, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; Prada Foundation, Milan; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall; Tel Aviv Museum of Art; South London Gallery; Mead Art Museum and numerous other institutions.
