Cardinal Points

The Flat - Massimo Carasi inaugurates the 2017-2018 exhibition season with a solo show of works by Sauro Cardinali.

"Cardinal Points" collects the elements that contribute to the definition of a psycho-physical map in which the artist places us, inviting us to elaborate the linguistic meanings of the objects and circumstances involved.

The use of multiple compositional techniques, with the addition of "linguistic traps" - that at times echo in the titles of works on show -, distracts the viewer from a singular interpretation of the works' significance, leading us to go beyond the physical realm and explore the territory in all of its dimensions.

Punti Cardinali

Sauro Cardinali (Spina,PG Italy, 1951) founded the “Cronotopo” group in the 1970's, whit whom he established a research pathway in various forms of art, including theatre. From the 1980's he got interested into issues involving the theory of images and their transformation through the rielaboration of symbols and materials. During the last years he's been developing a research for a new rigourous order, which he defines as “ della regola” (ruled), presenting artworks known as “Selfportraits”, the “Rolls”, the “Name's adventures”, the “Butterflies lunch” and “Esthasis and fallings”.
All of them came from a “destiny” process that relies within the materials and the written word, his own name, his selfportrait, throughout a constant work of decomposing and recomposing with unity and multiplicity of the surface, which allows the image to re-appear, defining a new spatial confition and introducing a deep reflection of his own definition.
He has served as Professor at the Academies of Carrara, Bologna, Rome and Perugia.

Public artworks: In 2010 he realized a permanent artwork for Gubbio's graveyard. In 2009 he realized “Ticchettiamo” (“Let's tick tock”) for Giovanni Scibilia's home, while in 2001 he won a contest for the restoration of Agusto Imperatore Square in Rome, and realized an artwork for Foligno's public library and one for Siena's municipality.
His work is documented by the catalogue of an exhibition set in 1991 at the Contemporary Art Gallery of Arezzo's Municipality (“Sauro Cardinali from 1984 to 1990”; Edited by Mazzotta, curated by Viviana Gravano with texts by Enrico Crispolti and Francesco Poli); and by Aldo Iori's book “Sauro Cardinali, denomination becomes space, artworks from 1991 to 2001”, edited by Filippo Fettucciari Arte in Perugia. “Sauro Cardinali – names, words, selfportraits” is the reference catalogue for the exhibition geld at Museo Virgiliano di Pietole in 2000 – Corraini.
A shortlist of the solo shows that have been dedicated to Cardinali features “Madre Ammirabile” Galleria di Porta Latina Rome (2015), “Giostra Grama” Freemacco Dertua (2015), “Pages of a fantastic bestiary” at Galleria Civica di Modena (2010), “The butterflies' lunch” at Studio Morbiducci Rome (2006), “There's nothing to look at in absolute” Trebisonda, Perugia (2003), “Names and words, selfportraits” Virgilian Museum in Mantova (2000), The heart's white walls” at Studio Cavalieri in Bologna (1995), “When the dream starts expelling the dreamer” at Archivio Crispolti Arte Contemporanea, Arezzo (1994), “Confetti's factory” at Studio Tommaseo in Trieste (1991), among the others.
Between the various exhibitions he's been featured, we remind “Night hours” at the Culture Palace in Catania (2016), “Almost Bodies” at The Flat – Massimo Carasi gallery in Milan (2016), LXV Michetti Prize at Francavilla Al Mare (2014), the Italian Pavillion at the Venice Biennale in 2011, the Biennale of Sculpture in Gubbio (1994, 1997, 2006, 2008), “Art Architecture City” at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome (2001), “Nice Weather” at Ludwig Muzeum in Budapest and “Sauro Cardinali, Dadamaino” Loggia dei Lanari, Perugia (1999)
