The Link Art Center is proud to announce the exhibition Raus aus dem digitalen Unbehagen / Escaping the Digital Unease. Curated by Raffael Dörig, Director Kunsthaus Langenthal, with Domenico Quaranta and Fabio Paris, Link Art Center, Brescia, the exhibition will open on August 30, 2017 at 6 PM at Kunsthaus Langenthal, and will be on view from August 31 to November 13, 2017.
After 25 years of the World Wide Web it has become commonplace that our life also happens in digital communication spaces. But unease spreads in this digital life. While we’re using products by Apple, Amazon, Google, Facebook and find them useful and indispensable, we’ve become aware of the dominance of such big players. Their services form our thoughts and commodify the idea of friendship and exchange. We do not surf the wild web anymore, but are fed with feeds, receiving more and more of the same based on algorithmic extrapolations of our preferences. With the social media account we rent services, which we pay with our data and attention. The latest with Edward Snowden’s disclosures also the excessive government-surveillence and their link to private actors has become common knowledge.
Since the beginning of the web, artists have built their own spaces and channels there. They have created artworks that reacted to commodification and restrictions in a critical way. In the early web – a time of great utopian ideas about the new medium – artists have tried to co-build the web with their works, texts, friendships and technological solutions. In the last few years, important artworks have been created by exploring digital pop culture, the defaults of commercial platforms and the web mainstream. Now is the time to raise questions about new forms of critique, self-organized platforms and tools, a revisiting of the utopias of the early web, new networks of art, activism and friendship – the question of alternatives.
The exhibition presents works from over 30 artists and collective who tackle these topics, raise awareness to the unease, show the causes or possibilities of escape from it. A selection of books and artist publications are presented in a reading room.
The exhibition is accompanied by a publication with essays on the heritage of critical net-culture and the future of the commons (Felix Stalder), on Bots and Artificial Intelligence (Maria Lechner), media-theoretical hand-on tips for an escape from the digital unease (Paul Feigelfeld), as well as other texts by Raffael Dörig, Domenico Quaranta, Claire Hoffmann, with numerous images. Curata da Raffael Dörig, Direttore della Kunsthaus Langenthal, con Domenico Quaranta e Fabio Paris del Link Art Center, la mostra aprirà il 30 agosto 2017 alle 18.00 presso la Kunsthaus Langenthal, e sarà visitabile dal 31 agosto al 13 novembre 2017.
Dopo venticinque anni di World Wide Web, è quasi un luogo comune dire che la nostra vita si svolga anche negli spazi della comunicazione digitale. Ma questa vita digitale la viviamo con disagio. Usiamo prodotti di compagnie come Apple, Amazon, Google e Facebook, e pur trovandoli utili e necessari, siamo divenuti consapevoli della loro posizione dominante. I loro servizi plasmano il nostro pensiero e commercializzano i principi di amicizia e di scambio. Non navighiamo più nel selvaggio web, ma siamo ingozzati di feed, e grazie all’estrapolazione algoritmica delle nostre preferenze, vediamo solo quello che ci somiglia. Con i nostri account sociali noleggiamo servizi che ripaghiamo con i nostri dati, e la nostra attenzione. E con le rivelazioni di Edward Snowden, anche i legami tra attori privati e un eccesso di sorveglianza governativa sono diventati palesi.
Dai primi anni del web, gli artisti vi hanno stabilito i propri spazi e canali di comunicazione. Hanno creato lavori che reagiscono alla commercializzazione e ai limiti del sistema in maniera critica. Nei primi anni della rete – una fase di grandi idee utopistiche sul nuovo mezzo – gli artisti hanno cercato di contribuire alla sua progettazione con opere, testi, reti di relazione e soluzioni tecnologiche. Negli ultimi anni, sono stati fatti lavori importanti che esplorano la cultura pop digitale, le impostazioni delle piattaforme commerciali e il mainstream della rete. Ora è giunto il momento di interrogarsi su nuove forme di critica, sulla possibilità di piattaforme e strumenti indipendenti, e di rivisitare le utopie dei primi anni del web, le nuove reti di arte, attivismo e amicizia – di sollevare, in altre parole, la questione delle alternative.
La mostra presenta i lavori di più di 30 artisti e collettivi che affrontano questi temi, creando consapevolezza di questo disagio, mostrandone le cause e provando a individuare delle vie di fuga. Accanto alle opere, una selezione di libri e pubblicazioni d’artista sarà presentata in una reading room dedicata.
La mostra è accompagnata da una pubblicazione con documentazione dei lavori e saggi sull’eredità della cultura critica di rete e il futuro dei commons (Felix Stalder), sui bot e l’intelligenza artificiale (Maria Lechner), sui suggerimenti pratici per sfuggire al disagio digitale proposti dalla teoria dei media (Paul Feigelfeld), e altri testi di Raffael Dörig, Domenico Quaranta, Claire Hoffmann. Pubblicato in inglese e tedesco da Christoph Merian Verlag, il libro sarà presentato il 14 ottobre alle 18.30.
