Miwa Komatsu – Live Painting Performance

Live painting performance dell’artista giapponese Miwa Komatsu. L’evento si inserisce nelle celebrazioni per il 160° anniversario delle relazioni diplomatiche tra Italia e Giappone e rappresenta la seconda tappa di un progetto internazionale dedicato a San Michele Arcangelo, dopo Mont-Saint-Michel e prima del Santuario di Monte Sant’Angelo.

Sabato 1° agosto alle ore 18, la Sacra di San Michele diventerà il palcoscenico della live painting performance dell’artista giapponese Miwa Komatsu, protagonista di un progetto internazionale che attraversa alcuni dei più significativi luoghi del culto micaelico in Europa attraverso il linguaggio universale dell’arte.

L’iniziativa si inserisce nel quadro delle celebrazioni per i 160 anni di relazioni diplomatiche tra Italia e Giappone, rafforzando il dialogo culturale tra i due Paesi attraverso un percorso che unisce arte contemporanea, spiritualità e patrimonio storico-religioso.

L’evento è patrocinato dalla Sacra di San Michele, dal Consolato Generale del Giappone a Milano, dalla Fondazione Italia Giappone, dai Comuni di Sant’Ambrogio di Torino e Chiusa di San Michele, e dal Museo d’Arte Orientale Mazzocchi di Coccaglio (BS). La performance sarà moderata dal professor Paolo Linetti, direttore del Museo d’Arte Orientale Mazzocchi.

Dopo il live painting realizzato nel novembre 2023 presso l’Abbazia di Mont-Saint-Michel, in Normandia, dove una delle opere è stata donata alla città francese, Miwa Komatsu approda alla Sacra di San Michele per dare vita a una nuova creazione ispirata all’energia spirituale del luogo. In continuità con quanto già avvenuto a Mont-Saint-Michel, le opere realizzate alla Sacra di San Michele e al Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo di Monte Sant’Angelo saranno donate ai rispettivi siti.

Per Miwa Komatsu il live painting non è una performance in senso tradizionale, ma un atto creativo di preghiera. L’atto del dipingere nasce dall’ascolto del luogo e dalla trasformazione della sua energia spirituale in immagine, in un’esperienza condivisa con il pubblico. Al termine della performance, l’opera sarà donata alla Sacra di San Michele, entrando a far parte del patrimonio del Santuario come testimonianza permanente di questo incontro.

La ricerca artistica di Miwa Komatsu, definita The Great Harmonization, si fonda sulla convinzione che tutti gli esseri viventi condividano la stessa essenza spirituale. Le sue celebri Divine Spirits, le creature sacre che popolano le sue opere, ispirate ai tradizionali komainu giapponesi, diventano simboli universali di protezione, armonia e connessione tra il mondo visibile e quello invisibile, superando ogni confine culturale e religioso.

Considerata una delle voci più autorevoli dell'arte contemporanea giapponese, Miwa Komatsu è presente nelle collezioni permanenti del British Museum di Londra, del Simose Art Museum, del Nagano Prefectural Art Museum, oltre che di numerosi templi e santuari in Giappone. Le sue opere fanno inoltre parte della collezione della città di Mont-Saint-Michel e sono state esposte in importanti istituzioni internazionali.

Miwa Komatsu at the Sacra di San Michele: a live painting performance between art and spirituality

As part of the celebrations marking 160 years of diplomatic relations between Italy and Japan, on August 1st the Sacra di San Michele hosts the second stage of an international project dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, following Mont-Saint-Michel and preceding the Sanctuary of Monte Sant’Angelo.

Sant’Ambrogio di Torino, July 2026 – On Saturday, August 1st at 6:00 PM, the Sacra di San Michele will become the stage for a live painting performance by Japanese artist Miwa Komatsu, at the heart of an international project that explores some of the most significant sites dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel in Europe through the universal language of art.

The initiative is part of the celebrations marking the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Japan, further strengthening cultural dialogue between the two countries through a journey that intertwines contemporary art, spirituality and historical heritage.

The event is held under the patronage of the Sacra di San Michele, the Consulate General of Japan in Milan, the Italy–Japan Foundation, the Municipalities of Sant’Ambrogio di Torino and Chiusa di San Michele and the Oriental Art Museum Mazzocchi in Coccaglio (BS). The performance will be moderated by Professor Paolo Linetti, Director of the Oriental Art Museum Mazzocchi.

Following the live painting held in November 2023 at the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey in Normandy, where one of the works created was officially donated to the city of Mont-Saint-Michel, Miwa Komatsu now arrives at the Sacra di San Michele to create a new work inspired by the spiritual energy of the site. In continuity with Mont-Saint-Michel, the works created at the Sacra di San Michele and at the Sanctuary of Monte Sant’Angelo will be donated to their respective sites.

For Miwa Komatsu, live painting is not a traditional performance, but an act of creative prayer. Painting arises from listening to the spirit of the place and transforming its spiritual energy into visual form, creating a shared experience with the audience. At the end of the performance, the artwork will be donated to the Sacra di San Michele, becoming part of the sanctuary’s heritage as a permanent testimony of this encounter.

Komatsu’s artistic vision, defined as The Great Harmonization, is based on the belief that all living beings share the same spiritual essence. Her Devine Spirits (guardian lion-dogs (komainu) are universal symbols of protection and harmony, transcending cultural and religious boundaries and creating a dialogue between the visible and the invisible worlds.

Among the most recognized voices in contemporary Japanese art, Miwa Komatsu is included in the permanent collections of the British Museum in London, the Simose Art Museum, the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum, as well as numerous temples and shrines in Japan. Her works are also part of the collection of the city of Mont-Saint-Michel and have been exhibited in major international institutions.

With the Sacra di San Michele stage, the project strengthens cultural dialogue between Italy and Japan, as part of the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations, presenting art as a universal language capable of connecting traditions, spirituality and shared heritage.
