Cosa significa libertà? La ricerca di Mashid Mohadjerin mette a fuoco diverse storie di resistenza femminile in Medio Oriente ed in Nord Africa. Realizzando un corpo di lavoro eterogeneo che, attraverso la fotografia, il collage, il testo e le immagini d’archivio, porta lo spettatore in un viaggio onirico senza spazio e tempo.
Il lavoro di Mashid è permeato da una tensione tra opposti: tra documentazione e arte, passato e presente, dolore e gioia, guerra e pace, perdita e creazione. La mostra ed il libro d'artista, che accompagna l’esposizione, si concentrano sulla vita privata e pubblica delle donne iraniane cresciute dopo la Rivoluzione del 1979 e sui luoghi più significativi dell'infanzia dell’autrice.

Per queste donne la sfera politica non può più essere separata da quella personale: i loro corpi e la loro vita sono e continuano ad essere influenzati dalla Rivoluzione. Le opere di Mashid Mohadjerin fanno parte di una ricerca di dottorato artistico presso la Royal Academy of Fine Arts e l'Università di Anversa, iniziata come uno studio sulle donne combattenti per la libertà e culminata in un viaggio molto personale nel suo nativo Iran.

Mashid Mohadjerin è una fotografa di origini Iraniane con base in Belgio. Il suo lavoro esplora i confini tra arte e fotografia documentaria, concentrandosi su ingiustizie sociali, identità e resistenza.
Negli ultimi 15 anni ha prodotto lavori che affrontano temi come la migrazione, lo spostamento, i confini, l'alienazione culturale e sociale e la ricerca dell'identità culturale. Il suo ultimo progetto fa parte del suo dottorato di ricerca in arti sul ruolo delle donne nelle recenti rivolte e rivoluzioni in Medio Oriente ed oltre. Mettendo in discussione le rappresentazioni fotografiche del Medio Oriente e di altri stati rispetto a certi problemi, continua a ricercare nuovi modi per affrontarli e raccontarli, in tutta la loro complessità.
I suoi progetti ed incarichi l'hanno portata in giro per il mondo in regioni dell’Asia centrale, dell'Africa occidentale, del Medio Oriente, dell'Europa e degli Stati Uniti. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto in tutto il mondo e presentato su testate qual The New York Times, Newsweek, Time magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Le Monde, La Domenica di Repubblica, The Globe & Mail, BBC. Ha ricevuto il primo premio nella categoria Contemporary Issues ai World Press Photo Awards 2009. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto in gallerie, festival e musei come BOZAR Center for the Arts (Bruxelles), The Museum of Contemporary Art (Anversa), Fotolegendo (Roma), Kunsthal Extra City (Anversa), Red Star Line Museum, Noorderlicht Festival ( NL) e fa parte di collezioni private e istituzionali. Nel 2021 ha conseguito un PhD in the Arts. Il suo libro d’artista ”Freedom is Not Free" ha vinto il Rencontres d'Arles Author's Book Award nello stesso anno. Questo è il suo terzo libro fotografico.

What does freedom mean? Through the lens of her camera Mashid Mohadjerin explores stories of women in resistance in the Middle East and North Africa. Creating a multidimensional work which, through its varied formats such as photography, collage, text, and archival images, takes the viewer on a dreamlike journey neither bound by space nor time. Mashid’s work is permeated with the dueling nature of documentation and art, past and present, pain and joy, war and peace, loss and creation.
The exhibition and the accompanying art-book focus on the private and public world of Iranian women who grew up after the Revolution of 1979 and on places of significance from Mashid’s childhood. For these women the political can no longer be separated from the personal - their bodies, their private and public life have been and continue to be influenced by the Revolution. Mashid Mohadjerin's works is part of an Artistic Doctoral Research at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Antwerp, which started as a research on female freedom fighters and culminated in a very personal journey to her native Iran.

Mashid Mohadjerin is an Iranian born photojournalist and portrait photographer based in Belgium.
Her work explores the boundaries between art and documentary photography, focusing on social injustice, identity and resistance. Over the last 15 years she has produced work addressing topics such as migration, displacement, borders, cultural and social alienation and the quest for cultural identity. Her latest project is part of her PhD in the Arts, highlighting the role of women in recent uprisings and revolutions in the Middle East and beyond. She is questioning photographic representations of the Middle East and beyond and keeps exploring new ways to visualize these complex issues. Her projects and assignments have taken her around the world to hotbed regions in central Asia, West Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and throughout the United States. Her work has been exhibited worldwide and featured in publications such as The New York Times, Newsweek, Time magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Le Monde, La Domenica di Repubblica, The Globe & Mail, the BBC. She received first prize in the Contemporary Issues category at the World Press Photo Awards 2009, among other prices and grants. Her work is shown in galleries, festivals and museums such as BOZAR Center for the Arts (Brussels), The Museum of Contemporary Art (Antwerp), Fotolegendo (Rome), Kunsthal Extra City (Antwerp), Red Star Line Museum, Noorderlicht Festival (NL) and is part of private and institutional collections. In 2021 she finalized her PhD in the Arts. Her resulting artist monograph “Freedom is Not Free” wins the Rencontres d’Arles Author’s Book Award in the same year. This is her third Photo Book.
