Lorenzo Montinaro – Spirito Sangue

Contemporary Cluster è lieta di presentare Spirito Sangue, mostra personale di Lorenzo Montinaro a cura di Maria Abramenko presso la Basilica Cattedrale di San Cataldo, a Taranto, che inaugurerà venerdì 23 maggio alle ore 19.00.
La mostra, realizzata con il patrocinio della Regione Puglia e del Comune di Taranto, nasce in occasione del giubileo ordinario cattolico, per volere dello stesso artista e del parroco della basilica di San Cataldo Don Emanuele Ferro. In un momento solenne di revisione, espiazione e rinnovamento spirituale quale è il giubileo cattolico, Lorenzo Montinaro guarda all’uomo come peccatore, e tutte le opere, in modi diversi, vi fanno riferimento. Il titolo stesso abbassa l’uomo verso la terra, sottraendolo a ogni idealizzazione e riconsegnandolo alla sua materia fragile. Il sangue, lo spirito, la memoria: questi sono i materiali invisibili della mostra. Il materiale principale, però, è il tempo.
Taranto porta il peso di vite che si dissolvono senza lasciare traccia. Qui, la scomparsa non attende il tempo: si insinua nei muri, si mescola al respiro, si deposita sulla superficie delle cose, finché anche i materiali più resistenti iniziano a svanire. Montinaro incide in questa dissoluzione; non cancella semplicemente: rimuove selettivamente, lasciando emergere lettere dal vuoto, epitaffi fratturati che fluttuano tra il riconoscibile e l’oblio. In queste iscrizioni frammentarie, il linguaggio stesso diventa rovina: qualcosa di semisepolto, qualcosa che fatica a parlare. Per Spirito Sangue, Montinaro non si confronta solo con il peso della morte, ma anche con il peso del luogo. Alcune opere della mostra sono site-specific, create in dialogo diretto con il Duomo di Taranto—una chiesa che, come la pratica dell’artista, si trova sulla soglia tra conservazione ed erosione. Dentro queste mura, la pietra è stata testimone per secoli, tanto della devozione quanto del decadimento. Le sue incisioni parlano di questo equilibrio fragile, dove il sacro è inseparabile dalla perdita e la storia è sempre sull’orlo della scomparsa.
La ricerca di Montinaro è attraversata dalle voci di coloro che, prima di lui, hanno fatto i conti con la morte. La poesia di Salvatore Toma, i riti funebri di Ernesto De Martino—tutti riecheggiano ai margini del suo lavoro, non come riferimenti diretti, ma come ossessioni condivise.
Spirito Sangue non è un monumento. È una ferita, una messa a nudo, un monito che nulla—né la pietra, né la memoria, né il respiro—sfugge alla scomparsa.

Lorenzo Montinaro è nato a Taranto nel 1997. Vive e lavora tra Milano e Taranto. Si è laureato in Didattica e comunicazione dell'arte all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma e si è laureato in Arti Visive allo Iuav di Venezia.
Da gennaio a dicembre 2022 è stato artista in residenza presso gli studi Viafarini a Milano. Nel 2021 ha partecipato alla mostra “What the fuck is prosperity”, presso A plus a, a cura di Curatorial School, a Venezia. Contemporary Cluster is pleased to present Spirito Sangue, a solo exhibition by Lorenzo Montinaro curated by Maria Abramenko, hosted at the Basilica Cathedral of San Cataldo in Taranto. The exhibition will open on Friday, May 23 at 7:00 PM.
Organized under the patronage of the Puglia Region and the Municipality of Taranto, the exhibition was conceived for the occasion of the Catholic Ordinary Jubilee, at the initiative of the artist himself and Don Emanuele Ferro, parish priest of the Basilica of San Cataldo.
In this solemn time of reflection, expiation, and spiritual renewal that the Jubilee represents, Lorenzo Montinaro turns his gaze toward humanity as inherently sinful, a theme reflected throughout the exhibition’s works in various forms. The title Spirito Sangue (“Spirit Blood”) brings humanity back down to earth, stripping away any idealization and restoring it to its fragile material essence. Blood, spirit, memory: these are the invisible materials that constitute the exhibition. But the principal material is time itself.
Taranto bears the weight of lives that dissolve without a trace. Here, disappearance does not wait for time: it creeps into the walls, mixes with the air, settles on the surfaces of things, until even the most resilient materials begin to vanish. Montinaro engages with this dissolution; he does not simply erase but removes selectively, allowing letters to emerge from the void—fractured epitaphs that float between recognition and oblivion. In these fragmentary inscriptions, language itself becomes ruin: something half-buried, something that struggles to speak.
For Spirito Sangue, Montinaro confronts not only the burden of death but also the burden of place. Some of the works are site-specific, created in direct dialogue with the Cathedral of Taranto—a church that, like Montinaro’s practice, stands on the threshold between preservation and erosion. Within these walls, the stone has witnessed centuries of both devotion and decay. His engravings speak to this fragile balance, where the sacred is inseparable from loss, and history forever teeters on the brink of disappearance.
Montinaro’s research resonates with the voices of those who, before him, grappled with death: the poetry of Salvatore Toma, the funerary rituals studied by Ernesto De Martino—all echo on the margins of his work, not as direct references but as shared obsessions.
Spirito Sangue is not a monument. It is a wound, an exposure, a reminder that nothing—not stone, nor memory, nor breath—escapes disappearance.

About the Artist
Lorenzo Montinaro was born in Taranto in 1997. He lives and works between Milan and Taranto. He earned a degree in Art Education and Communication from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and a degree in Visual Arts from IUAV University of Venice.
From January to December 2022, he was an artist-in-residence at the Viafarini studios in Milan. In 2021, he participated in the exhibition What the fuck is prosperity at A plus A Gallery, curated by the Curatorial School in Venice. In 2022, he took part in Visioni (s)velate at Viafarini curated by Elena Bray, E ci fa dispetto il tempo at Sottofondo Studio in Arezzo curated by Elena Castiglia, Monumento during the Bolzano Art Weeks curated by Nina Stricker, Rea Art Fair at Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan curated by Rea, and Ma tu rimani at Casavuota in Rome curated by Sabino De Nichilo and Francesco Paolo Del Re.

In 2023, the Municipality of Milan commissioned him to create a permanent monument dedicated to the 1938 Jewish Census, located at the Cittadella degli Archivi di Milano.
Also in 2023, Montinaro was listed by Exibart magazine among the 222 emerging artists worth investing in.
