La galleria Raffaella Cortese è orgogliosa di ospitare, negli spazi di Via Stradella 1 e 7, la terza personale di Jana Stebark, artista ceca naturalizzata canadese, nota fin dagli anni '70 e '80 per le sue performance ispirate alle tematiche del potere e della sessualità. La sua produzione è caratterizzata da una grande sperimentazione e spazia dalla performance alle installazioni, dalla scultura al video e alla fotografia.
A seguito della partecipazione di Jana Sterbak alla mostra Les Papesses ad Avignone, nella prestigiosa sede dei Palazzo dei Papi e della Fondazione Lambert, saranno esposti a Milano una selezione di lavori che coprono un ampio lasso temporale, dai disegni degli anni ’80 alle sculture dell’ultimo decennio. In mostra lavori celebri come Uniform (1991) e Proto-condition: Cage for sound (1994), sculture utilizzate come gabbie per immobilizzare il corpo e renderne faticoso il movimento. Altre opere suggeriscono un ipotetico utilizzo reso vano dai materiali usati per la loro realizzazione, come Spire Spine (1983), una colonna vertebrale di scorta in bronzo e Corona (2007), una corona di foglie di alloro bagnate nell’argento. Chemise de Nuit, invece, si presenta come un'insolita camicia da notte femminile a cui sono stati applicati dei peli sul petto che sottolineano l’interesse dell’artista per le tematiche legate al Gender.

Jana Sterbak (Praga, 1955) vive e lavora a Montreal, Canada. Negli ultimi vent'anni i suoi lavori sono stati esposti nei più importanti musei del mondo: la National Gallery of Canada ad Ottawa (NGC) (2012, 2008), il Centre Pompidou a Paris (2010–09), il Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (2012, 2011), la 50° Bienniale di Venezia (2003), e il Museum of Modern Art di New York (1992). Nel 1995-1996 la mostra Velleitas è stata ospitata dal Musée d'art moderne di Saint-Etienne, da Fundació Antoni Tapies di Barcelona e dalla Serpentine Gallery, Londra. La personale Jana Sterbak: States of Being, organizzata da NGC, ha viaggiato nel Nord- America tra 1991 e 1992. Jana Sterbak ha ricevuto premi prestigiosi quali il Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2012 e il Prix Antoine Guichard, in Francia nel 1994.

Raffaella Cortese is proud to present the third solo exhibition by Czech-born Canadian artist Jana Sterbak in the two gallery spaces, in Via Stradella 1 e 7. Even though she is mainly known for her performance works from the 70’s and 80’s, dealing primarily with the issues of power and sexuality, her production is characterized by great experimentation and it spreads between different media, including sculpture, installation, photography, video.
After her participation to the collective exhibition Les Papesses in Avignone, in the prestigious Pope's palace and at Lambert Foundation, some of her historical works, like the drawings from the 80’s, will be exhibited in Milan next to more recent sculptures. The show will be centered on the metaphors of the human condition, an issue Sterbak has been investigating since the early ’90, and in particular on the impossibility for the body to move because of obstructing structures, realized by the artist.
On show some seminal works, such as Uniform (1991) and Proto-condition: Cage for sound (1994), sculptures used as cages to block and encumber movement. Some other works evoke an hypothetical employ, which is prevented by the materials they are made of, such as Spire Spine (1983) a bronze spinal canal, Corona (2007), a crown made of bay leaves soaked. Chemise de Nuit instead is an unusual female nightgown with hair glued on the front, that suggests gender thematics Sterbak has inquired along her career.

Jana Sterbak (Prague in 1955) lives and works in Montreal, Canada. In the past 20 years, she has had exhibitions in major museums worldwide, including the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa (NGC) (2012, 2008), Centre Pompidou in Paris (2010–09), Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (2012, 2011), the 50th Venice Biennial (2003), and the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1992). In 1995-1996 the traveling exhibition Velleitas was held at Musée d'art moderne de Saint-Etienne, Fundació Antoni Tapies, Barcelona and at Serpentine Gallery, London. Her solo exhibition Jana Sterbak: States of Being, organized by NGC, toured across North America between 1991 and 1992. She has received important awards, including the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2012, and the Prix Antoine Guichard, France.
