Nell’ambito dell’edizione 2013 del festival internazionale FotoGrafia di Roma, The British School at Rome presenta “Possible Encounters”, una mostra di nuove opere fotografiche di Felix Davey. La mostra è sostenuta da Creative Scotland e da The British School at Rome. La sua inaugurazione avrà luogo sabato 5 ottobre 2013, in occasione della nona edizione della “Giornata del Contemporaneo” organizzata dall’AMACI (Associazione dei Musei d’Arte Contemporanea Italiani). “Possible Encounters” è una mostra di ritratti fotografici, paesaggi, e nature morte, che investigano le idee di tempo, famiglia, intimità, ambiente personale, e l’atto del pensare.

«Felix Davey è un giovane fotografo nord-irlandese che appartiene pienamente alla generazione della fluidità digitale. Dopo aver lavorato e viaggiato in Cina, Iran, Ebridi Esterne, Canada Settentrionale, Italia, vive ora a New York. Eppure per molto del suo lavoro usa un banco ottico su treppiede, compone le sue immagini alla rovescia sul vetro smerigliato, e si cala sulla testa lo stesso panno nero dei suoi colleghi di un secolo fa. Perché?
“Per imporre lentezza, concisione, e intensità d’impegno con il mio soggetto”, dice Davey. “Quando apro l’obiettivo sono spesso alla ricerca di un momento di contemplazione e di tranquillità. Come in attesa che si posi la polvere. Le ragioni estetiche sono secondarie, ma non vanno ignorate: amo la qualità, nitidezza, ricchezza cromatica che ottengo con questo procedimento”.
La serie “Possible Encounters”, che viene presentata in questa mostra all’Accademia Britannica, è stata creata durante la residenza di Felix Davey a Roma, sostenuta da Creative Scotland, nei primi mesi del 2013. Per ogni soggetto, Davey scatta in genere una sola immagine, “cosa che, per i ritratti, intensifica ulteriormente il processo”. L’uso della pellicola invertibile è legato anch’esso alla maggior ricchezza e saturazione del colore rispetto al negativo, e all’unicità del risultato. Al termine del processo – dice ancora Davey – “ho un oggetto bello e unico, che posso trarre dalla scatola, illuminare da dietro, esaminare con attenzione, e custodire”.» [Jacopo Benci]

Felix Davey è nato e cresciuto a Belfast. Ha conseguito un BA First Class Honours in Fotografia e Cinema presso la Napier University di Edimburgo. Negli ultimi cinque anni ha lavorato costantemente su propri progetti e commissioni in zone assai diverse tra loro quali Iran, Ebridi Esterne e Canada settentrionale. As part of the 2013 edition of the FotoGrafia international festival of Rome, The British School at Rome presents ‘Possible Encounters’, an exhibition of new photographic works of Felix Davey, who was resident at the BSR in January-March 2013 as Creative Scotland Document Fellow. The exhibition is supported by Creative Scotland and The British School at Rome. Its opening will take place on Saturday 5 October 2013, on the occasion of the ninth edition of the ‘Giornata del Contemporaneo’ organized by the AMACI (Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums). ‘Possible Encounters’ is an exhibition of photographic portraits, dedicated landscapes and still lifes that address ideas of time, family, intimacy, personal environment and the act of thinking.

«Felix Davey is a young photographer from Northern Ireland who fully belongs to the generation of digital fluidity. Having worked and travelled in China, Iran, the Outer Hebrides, Northern Canada and Italy, he now lives in New York. Yet for much of his work he uses a large, tripod mounted field camera to compose his images upside-down on the ground glass, under the same dark cloth his predecessors used a century ago. Why?

“To impose a slowness, a conciseness and an intensity of engagement with my subject,” says Davey. “When I open the lens I am often looking for a moment of contemplation and quietness. As though dust has settled. The aesthetic reasons are secondary, but shouldn't be ignored – I love the richness of quality, clarity and colour that the process gives me.”
The series “Possible Encounters”, which is presented in this exhibition at the British School, was made during Felix Davey’s Rome residency, supported by Creative Scotland, in the early months of 2013. For each subject, Davey usually makes only one exposure, “which, especially in portraiture, further intensifies the process.” The use of the transparency is also linked to the greater richness and saturation of colour compared to the negative, and the uniqueness of the result. At the end of the process – says Davey – “I have a beautiful, unique object that can be taken out of its box, lit from behind, pored over and treasured”.» [Jacopo Benci]

Felix Davey was born and raised in Belfast. He graduated with a First Class BA Honours degree in Photography and Film from Edinburgh Napier University. For the last five years he has worked continuously on personal and assigned projects in areas as diverse as Iran, the Outer Hebrides and Northern Canada.
