"Perché dei piaceri di primavera non vogliamo goderne fino in fondo? La nostra mente è come l’ospite che vide nella coppa la serpe: scopri l’illusione e l’inferno svanisce, si spalancano i cieli, nuvole di fiori tra i salici in un’eterna primavera del cuore."
Così il maestro zen Ikkyu Sojun ammonisce i suoi discepoli: la ricerca della verità è negli occhi di chi riesce a coglierla e cogliendola assapora la bellezza del creato.
Elena Achilli, artista fiorentina di grande talento e profonda poetica, sembra interpretare queste parole presentando una serie di opere pittoriche come istantanee di meditazione, sutre dipinte con grande delicatezza emotiva che mostrano occhi mai stanchi di meravigliarsi e di godere dell'infinita varietà offerta dalla natura. Per non rischiare di perdere il potere della vista, come disse Josef Koudelka celebre fotografo, Elena ha fatto suo l'antidoto del viaggio spostandosi, di luogo in luogo, mai come turista ma sempre come viaggiatrice. Differenza rilevante perché il primo, dopo poco tempo, avverte il bisogno di tornare a casa mentre il viaggiatore sente di appartenere al luogo nell'istante in cui lo conosce. Elena tiene il bagaglio leggero: colori, pennelli, un animo sapiente e sensibile che per quanto vasto non ha peso ma profondità. La casa è nell'intimo del suo cuore, un rifugio di ricordi illuminato dalla vita presente che periodicamente raccoglie, custodisce e ripianta in nuovi giardini. Come artista anche lei è attirata dalle aspre terre sarde esplorandole, ancora una volta, sui passi dei costumbristi di Spagna, dei maestri storici, dei poeti immortali, delle giovani promesse del dopoguerra; tutti hanno percorso a ritroso i sentieri calpestati dalle antiche genti “fra prati d’asfodelo e per le rupi”, intonando i versi di Satta, per smarrire l’occhio nell’immensità.
Nei suoi dipinti si condensano tracce di questo percorso che raccontano di un continuo confronto, un gioco d’intuizioni, tra il suo spirito e i luoghi abitati per opere che descrivono piacevolezze cromatiche e ritmiche arricchite da importanti contenuti metaforici.
Sono i fenicotteri che sorvolano i cieli tersi delle lagune a ricordarci quanto sia importante la libertà, o quando riposano, quasi sospesi nella luce immobile degli stagni, si fondono in armonici tonalismi per assurgere a metafora di equilibrio perfetto tra l'uno e il tutto. Il corpo della libellula è esile, ma attraversa ballando la tempesta, recita un antico detto buddista: eccole danzanti su fili d'erba mentre l'oro del sole impreziosisce tutta la composizione; e ancora, fiori botticelliani sospinti dal soffio di Zeffiro complementari alla forza materica dello sfondo in una dualità di esperienza fisica e ascesa spirituale.
La serie prosegue con piccoli colibrì in volo, rami fioriti e foglie vibranti in rossi ardenti, pesci che guizzano in mari azzurri, come nelle parole della Deledda che nei versi dedicati alla primavera rammenta il torrente sussultante in fondo alla valle, i pesci e i mandorli fioriti ..”E tutto era puro giovane, fresco, sotto la luce argentea del cielo.”
In tutte le opere ricorrono gli elementi radice dell’universo: acqua, aria, terra e fuoco per testimoniare bellezza e fragilità ma anche tanta forza vitale che nonostante tutto lotta e sopravvive alle barbarie umane.
A sviluppare ulteriormente il tema della bellezza sbocciano candide ninfee di reminiscenze monettiane, per provare come il ricordo, che filtra e idealizza, ha tanta parte nel gioco della vita. Sono i primi amori, decine e decine di tele realizzate nella ricerca ossessiva della luce: prestare la vita all’arte è una missione che pretende studi faticosi, solitudine, prove torturanti, battaglie perse, ma trovare un colore nell’aria vale ogni sacrificio.
Anche se non così espliciti, Elena ci invita nelle sue variazioni pittoriche a riconoscere affreschi pompeiani, orti ideali rinascimentali, calligrafie d’oriente, spirali preistoriche come potenti simboli sulla ciclicità della vita, dispiegando un armamentario frutto di lunghe peregrinazioni passate a sfiorare il mondo non per non lasciare traccia di sé ma per non intaccarlo, un insegnamento che dovremmo imparare a condividere.
Tra le abili pennellate, infine, prende forma una figura femminile: dea madre, alma Venere che nel celebre inno di Lucrezio, annuncia il suo arrivo " per mari e monti e per fiumi che travolgono e per le frondose dimore degli uccelli e i campi verdeggianti, incutendo a tutti nel petto un dolce desiderio d’amare". E’ l’epicureismo gioioso che trionfa nella forza creatrice della natura alle cui leggi ubbidisce tutto il mondo.

Elena Achilli, soprannominata Tosca per le sue origini, è convinta che niente è perfetto e tutto è perfettibile; niente è statico, tutto è in movimento....
Adora viaggiare, conoscere nuove persone, culture e costumi, che puntualmente appaiono nei suoi quadri e nei suoi sogni. E' una viaggiatrice ed il suo spirito ed i suoi occhi hanno bisogno di continui stimoli, la sua mente diventa un macigno quando non si nutre di tutto ciò, la monotonia e la negatività la turbano…

Ha iniziato a disegnare quando aveva 4 anni, dopo il Liceo Artistico e la laurea in Comunicazione e Design, presso l’ISIA di Urbino, ha iniziato a viaggiare e a dedicarsi al mondo della grafica e della fotografia, per poi tornare alla pittura. E’ una sognatrice e lavora molto con l’intuitivo e l’istinto, creando uno spazio in cui permette all'immagine di evolversi e di svelarsi.

I vari viaggi umanitari in Africa e Brasile, ma anche la sua vita fino ad ora, le hanno insegnato a non pensare a quello che le porterà il domani, ogni singolo istante del presente è un regalo e per questo cerca di viverlo intensamente, di essere pienamente presente, di gioire di se stessa e di gioire gli uni degli altri.

Il suo motto? "Live with passion, laugh out loud and love deeply..."

The nature of beauty

"Why don’t we want to enjoy to the utmost the pleasures of spring? Our mind resembles the guest who saw the snake in the cup: he discovered the meaning of illusion, hell vanished, the skies opened up, with clouds of flowers in the willows in the eternal spring of the heart. "
With these words, Zen master Ikkyu Sojun warns his disciples: the search for the Truth is in the eyes of those who behold it, and who, in doing so, can appreciate the beauty of creation.
Elena Achilli, Florentine artist of great talent and profound poetry, seems to interpret these words in a series of paintings presented as though snapshots of meditation, sutras painted with great emotional delicacy, that belie the eyes that never cease to tire in the marvel and enjoyment of the infinite variety offered by nature. To avoid losing the power of sight, in the words of the famous photographer Josef Koudelka, Elena has used the power of journey as her antidote, moving from place to place, never as a tourist but always as a traveler. The difference is significant; the tourist, after a while, feels the need to go home, whereas the traveler has an instant sense belonging to a place when beholding it for the first time. Elena’s luggage is light: paints, brushes, and a wise and sensitive soul that does not carry weight but depth. Her house is in the intimacy of her heart, a haven of memories irradiated by her present life, that she periodically collects, preserves and replants in new gardens. As an artist, she too is attracted by the rugged lands of Sardinia that she explores, once again, in the footsteps of the costumbrists of Spain, the master historians, immortal poets, the young post-war promises. They have all backtracked along the paths of the ancient people "through meadows of asphodel and ravines", singing the verses of Satta, to then lose their vision in the immensity.
In Elena’s paintings you can find a variety of traces of this path that narrates a constant exchange, a game of intuition between her spirit and the places inhabited by her works that describe rhythmic and chromatic beauty enriched by important metaphorical contents.
It is the flamingos flying through the clear skies of the lagoons that remind us of how important freedom is, or, when they rest, they almost float in the still light of the ponds, that blend in a harmonic chromatic blend to then rise to the metaphor of perfect balance between the one and the whole. The body of the dragonfly is thin, but dances through the storm, recites an old Buddhist saying: here they are, dancing in the grass while the golden colors of the sun embellish the composition. Again we find Botticelli-like flowers blown by Zephyr’s breath that counteract the material strength of the background in a duality of physical experience and spiritual ascent.
The series continues with small hummingbirds in flight, flowering branches and vibrant leaves in fiery red, fish that swim in azure seas, as in the words of Deledda who, in verses dedicated to the spring, recalls the stream flickering through the valley, fish and flowering almond trees. "It was all pure young, fresh, under the silvery light of the sky."
In all of Elena’s works are the recurring root elements of the universe: water, air, earth and fire to witness beauty and fragility but also a great life force that, despite everything, fights and survives the human barbarism.
As a further development of the theme of beauty is the blooming white water lilies reminiscing Monet, to prove that memory, which filters and idealizes, plays such a large part in the game of life. They are the first loves, dozens of paintings executed with the obsessive search of light: to give life to art is a mission that demands strenuous studies, loneliness, torturous trials, and many lost battles. However, the discovery of a color in the air is worth every sacrifice.
Although not as explicit, Elena invites us to recognize in her pictorial variations the Pompeian frescoes, ideal Renaissance gardens, oriental calligraphy, prehistoric spirals as powerful symbols of the circles of life. She deploys an arsenal that is the result of lengthy journeys barely grazing the world, to leave no trace of herself, without damaging it. A lesson that we should learn to share.
In the midst of her skillful brushstrokes, finally, a female figure takes shape: the goddess mother, Alma Venus, who in the famous hymn of Lucretius announces her arrival "through seas and mountains and tumultuous rivers and across the leafy bird sanctuaries and green fields, to instill a fresh desire to love in everyone’s chest." It is the joyful triumph of the creative force of nature, to which the entire world submits.

ELENA ACHILLI
Painting is the most creative activity in my life. I'm an Italian artist and I started painting when I was 4 years old, but after graduating in communication design I started working too hard and did not have enough time for my paintings. Thus after many trips all over the world I decided to start again...

ARTIST STATEMENT
Painting for me is a love affair: I’m profoundly passionate about it. I 'm a dreamer and I work very intuitively and instinctively, creating a space in which I allow the image to evolve and unravel. My practice demands that I'm courageous and openhearted and it always involves risk. I feel things with a burning intensity and my canvas provides a haven for these huge emotions.
I'm fascinated by chaos and order fragility and strength, existing simultaneously and the easy harmony that occurs in the natural world between these two forces. My canvas becomes a visual response to these elemental energies and polarities discovered within the environment and myself.
My work is a celebration of the colours and ultimate contrasts, no gradients. It embraces all that is misterious: the ambiguity is as relevant as the seen in the finished piece.
