Comunicato stampa
Adriana Varejão and Rosana Paulino, based in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, respectively, are representing Brazil at the 61st Biennale di Venezia in a presentation curated by Diane Lima. Titled Comigo ninguém pode—after the Portuguese name of the plant Dieffenbachia, which also resonates as a popular saying meaning “nobody can handle me” or “nobody can beat me”—the Brazilian Pavilion draws on these ambiguities as a metaphor for protection, toxicity, and resilience. In both artists’ works, reflections on colonial wounds and the rewriting of history give way to constant processes of metamorphosis, articulating new possibilities for imagination and poetic liberation.
