Nata in Israele, formatasi a Parigi e attualmente residente a New York, nel suo lavoro Keren Benbenisty investiga il rapporto tra cultura orientale e occidentale, con una particolare attenzione verso le istanze legate all’identità, alla storia, alla memoria e alla stratificazione.
Mare Nostrum è il progetto sviluppato per questa occasione, teso a esplorare il tema iconografico e semantico del mare, inteso nella sua accezione simbolica, culturale e geopolitica. Con un nucleo di lavori inediti che comprende scultura, video, disegno e installazione, l’artista approfondisce come, sin dalla metà dell'Ottocento, la sua connotazione classica e romantica si sia allargata fino a incorporare considerazioni di tipo sociale, politico e antropologico.

Born is Israel, Benbenisty studied in Paris and currently lives and works in New York. In her work she investigates the relationship between eastern and western culture, with a particular attention to instances related to identity, history, memory and stratification.
Mare Nostrum is the project she developed specifically for this occasion, with the aim to explore the semantic and iconographic theme of the sea, meant in its symbolic, cultural and geopolitical implications. With a body of works including sculpture, drawing, video and installation, the artist explores how, since the mid-end 19th century, its classical and romantic trait has expanded to incorporate social, political and anthropological considerations.
