Il tema di SHE DEVIL 8
è lo SPECCHIO quale luogo di riflessione e confronto in cui la nostra immagine è moltiplicata e analizzata in modo critico, alla ricerca di una nuova soggettività attraverso la quale impostare nuove dinamiche di relazione con il presente.
SHE DEVIL indaga sui contorni dell’identità femminile che a volte scivola sulla superficie riflettente e altre ha invece bisogno di spezzarne con violenza l’illusione. Tra passato e futuro è nel rispecchiamento che l’esistente si svela e si rivela su tanti diversi piani.
madrina di SHE DEVIL 8 è Elaine Shemilt con la video performance Doppelgänger. L’opera fa parte di una serie di sperimentazioni video di artiste donne degli anni ’70-’80, riscoperte e rimasterizzate in digitale dal progetto di ricerca REWIND, diretto dal Professor Stephen Partridge. Doppelgänger è uno dei due video ancora esistenti di una serie iniziata dalla Shemilt nel 1974 ed è stato recuperato nel 2011. Il termine doppelgänger è utilizzato nella cultura tedesca per indicare il gemello maligno (doppel /doppio, e gänger/che se ne va). Il doppelgänger di Elaine Shemilt è tutto al femminile. L’artista si trucca di fronte allo specchio in un rito diviso tra il volto e la sua immagine riflessa che genera il proprio doppio, protagonista assoluto del finale.

SHE DEVIL, nome di un’eroina della Marvel e titolo del famoso film del 1989 di Susan Seidelman, allude in modo giocoso allo spirito diabolico e bizzarro con cui l’esperienza artistica indaga e attraversa il quotidiano. I video si focalizzano su una ricerca al femminile e mettono a diretto confronto i diversi percorsi di indagine. Scopo dell’iniziativa è di sollecitare, a volte con ironia, a volte con realismo, la coscienza collettiva su temi come l’identità femminile, il corpo come luogo di rappresentazione e significato, l’esperienza personale che assurge dimensione universale anche quando è l’intimità delle artiste ad essere portata in primo piano.
SHE DEVIL nasce del 2006 da un’idea di Stefania Miscetti, coinvolgendo artiste e curatrici sia italiane sia internazionali, dalle più giovani alle più affermate.
Le varie opere e le differenti prospettive critiche convivono all’interno di un discorso a più voci, in cui emergono le molteplicità dei mondi e delle visioni femminili.
Dopo le prime due edizioni, del 2006 e del 2007, che vedevano coinvolte rispettivamente 4 e 6 curatrici (ed altrettante artiste), dal 2009, con la terza edizione, Stefania Miscetti decide di coinvolgere un maggior numero di curatori. Il successo dell’iniziativa è in quell’anno confermato
dall’edizione speciale internazionale tenutasi al Museo d’Arte Contemporanea MNAC di Bucarest.
Nel 2010, invece, dopo la quarta edizione del progetto, SHE DEVIL partecipa alla mostra La Follia dell’arte durante il Festival di Ravello.
Nel 2011 la quinta edizione del progetto viene presentata al Museo d’Arte Contemporanea MACRO Roma.
Nel 2014 è stata realizzata la sesta edizione, confermando un’attenzione costante da parte delle più importanti testate di informazione.
Nel 2015 oltre alla settima edizione, si sono tenute la prima e la seconda tappa di SHE DEVIL on tour, a Terni presso la sede espositiva di Palazzo Primavera, e a Belfast (UK) negli spazi della Golden Thread Gallery.

The theme of SHE DEVIL 8
is the MIRROR as a place of reflection and confrontation in which our image is multiplied and analyzed in a critical way, in pursuit of a new subjectivity through which to establish new dynamics of relation with the present.
SHE DEVIL investigates the contours of female identity, which sometimes slides on the reflecting surface, and in other cases needs to violently smash the illusion. Between past and future, what exists reveals itself, on many different planes, in the act of looking in the mirror.

is Elaine Shemilt with the video performance Doppelgänger.
The work is part of a series of video experiments by women artists in the 1970s and 1980s, rediscovered and digitally remastered by the research project REWIND, directed by Professor Stephen Partridge.
Doppelgänger is one of two still existing videos of a series begun by Shemilt in 1974, salvaged in 2011.
The term doppelgänger is used in German culture to indicate the evil twin (doppel / double, and gänger / goer).
The doppelgänger of Elaine Shemilt is utterly feminine. The artist puts on makeup in front of the mirror in a ritual divided between the face and its reflected image that generates the double, the absolute protagonist of the finale.
SHE DEVIL,
SHE DEVIL is the name of a heroine in the Marvel Comics universe, Shanna the She Devil, and title of the famous film from 1989 by Susan Seidelman. In this circumstance it alludes in a playful way to the diabolical and bizarre spirit with which artistic experience investigates day-to-day life. In continuity with the previous editions of the program, the videos represent female viewpoints and place the various fields of video art research in direct contrast to one another. The purpose of the initiative is to stress, at times using irony, at times realism, the collective consciousness on themes such as female identity, the body as repository of representation and meaning, and personal experiences on universal dimensions, even when the very intimacy of the artists is at the forefront of their works.
SHE DEVIL was founded in 2006 thanks to an idea of of Stefania Miscetti, and involves artists and curators, both Italian and international, from emerging young talents to highly acclaimed personalities. The various works and different critical perspectives coexist within a discourse of many voices, in which the multiplicity of feminine worlds and visions emerges. After the first two editions, in 2006 and in 2007, respectively with four and six curators (and the same number of artists), since 2009, with the third edition, Stefania Miscetti has decided to get more curators involved. The success of the initiative was confirmed that year by a special international edition held at the MNAC, National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest, Romania. In 2010, after the fourth edition of the project, SHE DEVIL was selected for the show The Madness of Art at the Ravello Festival. The fifth edition of the project took place in the summer of 2011 at MACRO, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome.In 2014 the 6th edition received extensive media coverage. In 2015 it was organized the 7th edition in Rome and the SHE DEVIL on Tour in Terni (Italy) and Belfast (UK).
