Pressrelease

On October 3th, 2014, the Gallery collicaligreggi inaugurates the solo show of Emmanuelle Lainé, entitled "non ingannare la pienezza delle mie capacità!"

Emmanuelle molds her works and positions them beyond their normal habitat with the aim of interrogating the inner nature of things. Her method of exploration and artistic creation is to model and analyze the creative space as if it were her own studio, revealing the stages of the work process. Each object comes to life in a mysterious and uncanny manner, following in the footsteps of their ancestors.

The work runs on the thin thread; the relationship between art and life, between reality and fiction. In this exhibition at Catania, the artist combines sculpture and photography, investigating the possibility of misleading the perceptions of man and his mind. Central to her work we find a duality between truth and representation, art and life. The work tries to go beyond this duality of truth and representation, to sort of "add" them together in order to offer an extended space, an extended reality, between art and life.

The photographs were taken from her latest exhibition at composite in Brussels and they are the result of an improvisation. The artist, for the occasion, had invited a master of agility and his two dogs and had urged them to pose without constraints, free to act in the exhibition space.

The two exhibitions refer to each other in a game of mirrors and illusions. Photographs of different sizes are alternated with the sculpture, made there and then by the artist, and nicknamed STUFF. A composite hanging sculpture full of different materials (vases, soil, plants, dried flowers etc) are casted together with clay and finished with acrylic resin mixed with yellow pigment. It is hung to a chain with a lifting tackle.

To further complicate the vision and the perception of the viewer, she has taken a large-format photo of the whole installation with the levitating shape and all the other objects. In post production she has erased the structure to which the «ROC» is hung, making it flying in the space on the photograph. As a result, the vision and the perception of the viewer is fooled, given the impression that the sculpture rises in the space.

The artist is concerned, above all, with the way in which objects are made, their composition, their weight, their resistance. She illustrates in a scientific manner the internal parts of the matter, the textures, the intricacies of the sculpture, giving clues to its manufacture and creation. The places make a slow metamorphosis and the sculptural objects lose their functionality, even if they always retain something of their primary origin (their colour, texture, style). This transformation, through the use of photography, reveals the creative process, the places and objects find themselves part of animal nature, primordial, strangely innate and familiar. The space that emerges is a temporary space, a tornado of meanings and coloured materials governed by unwritten laws, images embedded in the unconscious mind of the artist, which lead to the creation of works of art, and extend beyond, to the outside world.
