10 anni.

Niente.

E come a me è successo a tanti.

10 years.

I wish I could say that I have done something, anything, for that long in life.

Nothing ever lasted so long: not a relationship, a pet, an apartment, a job, a car. Nothing. Everything has come and gone in less than ten years.

The only two constants in my life, lasting more than a decade, are my love for art and being a woman.

I grew up in the countryside, up in the hills, and one day, in the school library I found an art history book. I liked it right away because it had so many pictures, compared to a regular one. On one of the pages, I found one that has infected me forever: a portrait of Egon Schiele. I was six years old. My parents worked the vineyards to produce wine before it became a trend and they never entered a museum until they visited one of my exhibitions. That black-and-white image of a girl has been the trigger of this unusual pathology that has always been with me and, as to me, it has happened to many others.

Art is often a painful choice. You have to deal with the real world that doesn’t understand it but somehow tolerates it. Going through your small daily battles:

”Paola Gallio ... Profession?”

”Curator.”

”Ah, you are a doctor! ... and what’s your specialty?”

”... no, look, I’m a curator, not a doctor ... I’m organizing exhibitions.”

”... ahh, you are an artist ... and well, in fact, one can tell ...”.

”... no, I’m not an artist, I’m a curator. I organize exhibitions for artists, I write ... “.

”... meh. Let’s put down Writer… “

”... no, I’m a curator, I’m not a writer, they are different occupations ...”.

”... well, I just want to know what is your job! How do you earn aliving, young lady? “

... this has lasted for ten years.

I recently met Giorgia for an aperitif in Milan in a weird place, through a collector, a dear friend, and a mentor. While that natural cosmic magnetism, which brings similar specimens to the pack, and our commune friendship, we connected immediately.

Giorgia tells me that she has had a gallery for years, that she drives a commercial vehicle parked illegally in the second row, and that she specializes in Eastern European and South East European artists.

I am puzzled and curious because the last time I studied a map of Europe, Southeastern Europe was Yugoslavia, and I’m still struggling to remember where the nations were geographically located after the conflict was over.

Georgia, however, knows the artists who came out of the war, after the fall of the Bolshevik’s technological dream.

Giorgia, it has been Giorgia Lucchi forever, and Boccanera Gallery for ten years which is not in Sarajevo, or in Venice, or in Milan. Boccanera is in Trento, a small city near the border area, where different cultures meet and live together.

Giorgia thinks about Trento as New York, London, Berlin because centrality is not necessary in the era of Instagram.

Boccanera moved from the city to a suburb area, just right off the Trento North exit, halfway between the Trento Civic Gallery and in the Museion – Bolzano direction, choosing as a navigated sailor might, an ideal location for the routes of the migratory flow of the Art system.

She chose a large industrial space for the artists she represents, designed to “exhibit art” because this is what a gallerist should prioritize when selecting a venue. However, often in the blind race to success, the essential gets lost.

Having a fluid identity, occasionally Boccanera flows away from the 200 square meters of Via Alto Adige to re-emerge in Via Ventura in Milan, Via Beatrice d’Este for MI art, in Via Roberto da Sanseverino for MUSE.

Boccanera is a gallery that has an unbridled passion for independent spaces and often it takes over their identity. It has built a chance to be both over time, due to endless well-planned moves, it is able to grow in this respect. Living for years in New York I learned that being an alternative gallerist is always “cool” but without a market, maybe you have chosen the wrong job. Giorgia uses Boccanera as a Transversal Exhibition Space with a high curatorial impact. By doing specific research for the commercial nature of the space, she perfectly calibrates its identity.

Giorgia is nomadic and often goes to the universities, and as a research GALLERY, she fills that inextinguishable gap between art students and the professional art world, typical of the Italian Academic institutions. Boccanera gives them an outlet and occasionally brings them to it project room dedicated to avant-garde projects for even younger artists than it already represents.

X is its tenth anniversary. It is a significant birthday. X is the next chapter after IX, Boccanera’s opening exhibition in 2007.

In X Giorgia will present the works of all the artists to whom she has dedicated an exhibition with a Salon-style setting, respecting the full flow of consciousness that represents the passion, the freedom, and the nonconformity of the gallery.

Art is a chronic illness for some people, and it comes unexpectedly. Art is a mental inclination, your background or your culture does not matter. Art injects its virus in you and hits incurably. Some, the strongest can suppress it, others mediate and act under the covers, most dive into it without shame, and proudly they carry the flag.

From IX to X is a significant step. A victory.
X is the tangible sign that Life teaches you, actually how to live it... if you can live long enough...
