TAMBURO DI LATTA (TIN DRUM) is the title of the first exhibition which inaugurates our 2011/2012 season in our new exhibition space on the 17th floor of the Baccari Tower in Latina.

'Il tamburo di latta' (Tin Drum) is a famous book published in 1959 by the German author Gunter Grass - Nobel prize for literature in 1999 -. This exhibition takes its inspiration from this book and from the subsequent screen version by Volker Schlöndorff which came out 20 years later, in 1979. It is the story of Oskar’s life, Oskar is a boy who was born in Danzica in the 1920’s and who, at the tender age of 3, both knowingly and autonomously, makes a drastic existential decision: to create a domestic accident which will cause the interruption of his growth, a decision dictated by the disenchanted observation of the negative behaviour of adults and by the complete refusal of ever becoming like them.
When he is born his mother promises him a special present, a Tin Drum which she will give him on his third birthday, this object will become his inseparable companion, the only element of contact with the outside world, it will beat out the rhythm of his days.
Set during the rise and fall of the Nazi regime and the tragedy of the Second World War, the story tells us about Oskar’s deepest thoughts and reflections, contrasting with the only phonetic element in his possession, his own voice, which he uses in a “primitive” way, merely to emit tremendous screams which can shatter windows and lamps. This is his terrestrial existence, a continuous battle in defence of his human dignity, against the absurdity of adult life which in his eyes is violent and hypocritical.
The works of art exhibited in the ROMBERG space take their cue from these events and develop into a journey which the five artists confront by delineating the themes which best represent the complex world of childhood and adolescence, in some cases with undefined contours, in others structured upon vital demands and of primary importance.
Oskar thereby becomes the emblem of the fragile equilibrium which governs the thoughts, the emotions, the new discoveries which accompany the child day to day and lead him along the way towards the age of reason and knowledge.

FEAR, psychology of the imagination, of desires, of fears: the bogey man, the dark, loneliness, pain, nightmares, the feeling of being abandoned.
Nicola VINCI.

TRUST, relationship with the outside world, our peers, our family, adults, our surroundings, historical events.
Antonio CERVASIO.
PLAY, recreation, conviviality, being carefree, the play room, possession of objects, the building of an imaginary world and identifying with invented characters.
Vincenzo MARSIGLIA.

CRISIS, growing up, awareness, knowledge of oneself and social responsibilities: sexuality, work, daily routine, survival.
Guido PECCI.

RECOLLECTION, the adult/child, our relationship with the past and its repercussions on the present: reaching maturity and the memory of our lost childhood.
Fernando ZUCCHI.

Saturday 1st of October in the ROOMBERG project space, on the ground floor of the Baccari Tower we will be inaugurating our first exhibition of our 2011/2012 season. This new season opens at the same time as our space on the 17th floor, it proposes an exhibition planned and built round the ROOMBERG project space which traces a homogenous route in the research of the present 'state of the art' of photography and videoart, mainly centred on the concept of 'analysis' and 'reload' (a sort of 'new awareness') in relation to digital thought which is conditioning contemporary life more and more.
The aim of these 5 alternating exhibitions is to present both photographic and video work in which the presence of digital elaboration can sometimes be determining, but never predominant, it can sometimes be merely thought about but not put into effect, this means that the technique used by each artist accepts the potential offered by new technology without being dominated by it, thereby obtaining results which lie on the border between real and imaginary, to the point where we feel unable to pick out the original nature of the image itself.
The artists, 15 + 5, take reality as the main base of their work, they reformulate and reinterpret it in order to obtain new meanings, never seen before.
The first exhibition, called Naked City, presents the photographic work of Filippo Centenari, Carlo D’Orta, Massimiliano Foscati, and a video by Devis Venturelli. The privileged subject of this exhibition is the city, investigated, narrated, dissected and given back to us without any visual cover that could mask its real identity, vital and formal.
The three photographers centre their research mainly on the concept of digital, seen both as technique and as visual and mental evolution of contemporaneity. The pixel, as basic element of the electronic image (Foscati), binary code as the constitutive structure of digital language (Centenari), the elaboration of images with photo-retouching software (D’Orta), represent the “matter” of work upon which they develop their analytical discourse on this present photographic research.
Devis Venturelli’s video, called Superfici fonetiche (Phonetic surfaces), is a ludic journey inside the city, an urban reconnaissance in which an atmospheric agent, the wind, acts as propeller to various metallic tongues which move freely around the streets emitting weak, delicate sounds.
