Il contesto che accoglie film d’artista in questa occasione è di natura scientifica, si tratta per l’esattezza del più importante ciclo di conferenze sugli eventi idrometereologici estremi nell’area del mediterraneo “Plinius Conference on Mediterranean Storms", che si svolgono a cadenza annuale, sempre in una città europea diversa. L’evento, organizzato dal CIMA Fondations, riunisce quest’anno al Priamar di Savona alcuni fra i più illustri scienziati e metereologi del mondo, invitati a confrontarsi su temi che riguardano la metereologia e le tempeste, spesso devastanti, dell’area del mediterraneo.

In questo quadro film d’artista propone la visione di opere video realizzate da artisti visivi di livello internazionale in un contesto architettonico di grande suggestione: la Fortezza del Priamar di Savona. Lontano dal voler mostrare l’aspetto spettacolare dell’evento catastrofico, le video installazioni selezionate sono tutte accomunate da uno spirito poetico ed allusivo più che descrittivo, in ognuno di loro si perpetua la distruzione di qualcosa e l’inevitabile trasformarsi in qualcos’altro, come accade nello straordinario video di Fischli & Weiss der lauf der dinge (1987) girato in un capannone industriale, dove una sorte di effetto domino, a metà tra il disastro annunciato e il riuscito esperimento da laboratorio chimico, anima una serie di oggetti: bottiglie, copertoni, bicchieri, scatole di cartone, pezzi di legno, candele, teiere etc. Acqua, aria, terra e fuoco sono gli elementi primari chiamati a governare questa reazione a catena che sembra sempre sul punto di interrompersi, sotto lo sguardo vigile dei due registi, quasi demiurghi, per l’occasione. Dalla collaborazione fra Carl Michael von Hausswolff e Thomas Nordanstad nasce il video Hashima (Giappone, 2002), ambientato in una piccola isola a largo di Nagasaki, un insediamento costruito dalla Mitsubishi e abbandonato negli anni Settanta. Il video mostra la storia dell’isola attraverso la sua visibile decadenza fisica dovuta all’abbandono e al passar del tempo. Masbedo raccontano, attraverso il video Teorema di incompletezza (2008), il difficile rapporto tra un uomo e una donna, tema centrale della ricerca dei due artisti. Attraverso la distruzione della sacralità e dell’intimità di una coppia, si sovrappongono voci e spari che colpiscono fino a ridurre ad un cumulo di macerie taglienti un tavolo abbandonato in una landa di ghiacci e sabbia lavica e una scultura di oggetti di uso quotidiano realizzati in cristallo. La video proiezione Temporale (2009) di Emanuele Becheri non è nient’altro che l'inquadratura della 'durata' temporale di un esterno notte, dove inizialmente non sembra accadere niente fino al momento in cui si scatena un tempesta e tale avvento cambia radicalmnete il panorama dello spazio fisso inquadrato; in effetti nient'altro che una scena banale in una strada qualsiasi di una provincia qualsiasi. Naturalmente il protagonista del video non è meramente l'evento atmosferico ma esso fa da parergon alle tracce che mette in movimento nello spazio dei 15 minuti. Protagonista del video Bunch del duo toscano Pantani Surace é un mazzo di fiori montato su un vecchio gioco degli anni settanta, che con un rapido ritmo di salita e discesa gradualmente si distrugge. La fragilità dei petali e la poetica immagine dei fiori contrastano con la violenza dell’azione così come con i suoni acuti e stranianti che l’accompagnano. Police video frame di Alterazioni Video è la ripresa fissa di un auto della polizia dove gli artisti utilizzano l’intermittenza delle luci della sirena per trasformarla in un suono elettronico e minimal. Girato a Shangai in Cina è frutto di una ricerca portata avanti dagli artisti, nel 2006, nei laboratori di fisica applicata della frei universitat di Berlino insieme al phd Mrkus Gohr, dove per la prima volta hanno sperimentato la possibilità di campionare i fotoni emessi da un laser per trasformarli poi in suono. Un anno dopo è la prima tappa del progetto “memory hunters” (cacciatori di memoria) che si propone di seguire negli anni, con gli studenti dell’Accademia dell’Immagine, la ricostruzione dell’Aquila e della sua identità. Presentato fuori concorso nella sezione Orizzonti Festival del cinema di Venezia 2010 è un lavoro in bilico tra documentario e video d’arte.

This year artists who have produced video work on the theme of ‘disaster’ have been invited to show their work at the "Plinius Conference on Mediterranean Storms." This conference, which takes place annually and always in a different European city, is the most important series of conferences on hydrometeorological extreme events in the Mediterranean area. This year the event is organized by CIMA Foundation and meets at the Savona Priamar where some of the most distinguished scientists and meteorologists in the world have been invited to discuss topics relating to meteorology and storms, which are often devastating, in the Mediterranean area.

These internationally renowned video film artists will have the opportunity to show there work in an architectural environment of great beauty; the Priamar Fortress of Savona. Far from wishing to show the appearance of a spectacular catastrophic event, the chosen video presentations are all sharing the same spirit of the poetic and the allusive rather than descriptive, and in each of them there is the perpetual and the inevitable destruction of something which is then transformed into something else. This is illustrated in the extraordinary video by Fischli & Weiss The Way Things Go (der Lauf der Dinge 1987) which was shot in an industrial building where a sort of domino effect, somewhere between a disaster waiting to happen and the successful experiment in the chemical research laboratory, animates a series of objects: bottles, tires, glass, cardboard boxes, pieces of wood, candles, teapots, etc. Water, air, earth and fire are the primary elements called upon to govern this chain reaction that always appears about to stop, under the watchful eye of two filmmakers, almost demiurge for the occasion. A collaboration between Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Thomas Nordanstad created this video Hashima(Japan, 2002), which is set on a small island off the coast of Nagasaki, a settlement built by Mitsubishi but later abandoned in the seventies. The video shows the tragic history of the island and its visibly physical decline over the passage of time. Masbedo created the video, The Therum of Incompleteness (2008), to tell the story of the difficult relationship between a man and a woman, which is the central theme researched by the two artists. Through the destruction of the sanctity and intimacy of a couple, there are overlapping voices and scenes that hit until reduced to a pile of rubble left abandoned in a land of ice and lava sand and a sculpture of everyday objects made of crystal. The Video presentation Storm (2009), by Emanuele Becheri, is nothing more than the framing of the 'duration' of a storm at night time, where at first nothing seems to happen until the moment when a storm breaks out. Such an advent radically changes the landscape, which is shown in fixed spaced frames, in fact it is nothing other than a scene in a mundane street in any region . Of course, the protagonist of the video is not merely the weather, but it is the comparison of events that set the wheels in motion in the space of 15 minutes. The protagonist of the video, produced by the Tuscan pair Pantani-Surace, is a Bunch of flowers which are used in an old game from the seventies where there is a continuous rapid rise and fall movement which is repeated until the flowers are gradually destroyed. The fragility of the petals and the flowers contrasts with the poetic image of the violence as well as with the sharp and alienating sound that accompanies it. Police video frame (2006) by Alterazioni Video; the scene is of a stationary police car where the artists use the flashing lights of the siren and turn it into an a minimalistic electronic sound. It was shot in Shanghai, China, and is the result of research carried out by the artists in the laboratories of Applied Physics at the Free University of Berlin in 2006. They worked together with Mrkus Gohr Ph.D., and, for the first time, took the opportunity to experiment with samples of photons emitted from a laser and then transformed them into sound. A year later is the first stage of the project "Memory hunters" and together with the students and teachers from the Academy of Images, they will follow the reconstruction of the town of L’Aquila and of its identity. The video was an out of competition submission in the Horizons section of the Venice Film Festival in 2010 and is a balance between documentary and video art.
