Hanoi/Hong Kong

English version

Luce Gallery is delighted to open the new exhibiting season with the second solo show at the gallery by Ayman Baalbaki.
At the distance of three years and a half the libanese artist continue the collaboration with the gallery exposing a new series of works either on big large format canvases then with an installation on single works made of acrylic on paper that totally recall the painting expressivity.
Hanoi / Hong Kong is the new episode of the representation of the force inside the artist' work. In a growth of expressionist brushstroke, dense an matheric but at the same time sure and quick, the artist call forth to a political interpretation that turns in emotional. The symbols of a past war, always present in artist' eyes, form the principal subjects of his work, where prevail the expectation and the positivity symbolized by flowers and bright colours.
Baalbaki breaks the conventional rules of the portrait denying to the viewer the complete vision of the subject covered by the kaffiyeh, but giving a glimpse to the hero's sight, propose a contrast between impenetrability and lecture, in a painting that sinks roots the inconographyc byzantine culture.
The physicality of the portraits break into different subjects with the same expressive power and also in the destroyed building, in a crescent vertigo of vertical lines, is denied to the spectator the complete vision of the interrupted building, where the artist rises his tower of Babel as a symbol of rebirth and of protest, in a work where the symbology of the choosen subjects express the artist identity that remains personal in his introspective expression.
In Baalbaki dominate the tradition, the nostalgia and the expectation in a renewed representation that preempt the cultural islamic revolution. The Al Mulatham, the Freedom Fighter, as defined by middle-eastern people, is the artist's hero, that in him waking sovereign how to cast out demons of war.
Baalbaki point out the contrast between the war destruction and art itself as creation, sublimating an union difficult to obtain.
The exhibition one more time let the viewer with a question, to which the artist answer with the ambiguity of the masks and the metaphors through his classic symbols, that at least are transformed in universal truth.
