VERNISSAGE

09.12.2016 - 7pm

a r c h i p e l a g o is pleased to present a selection of artists' books at Matèria in Rome.

The show brings together 70 books and periodicals produced over recent months, some self-published, some from small publishers, and some still in dummy form. They come from 20 countries including Egypt, Japan, and Moldavia. The selection encompass publications by Marianne Bjørnmyr, Julia Borissova, Lewis Bush, Bernhard Cella, Laura El-Tantawy, Nicholas Gottlund, Ikuru Kwuajima, Tom Lovelace, Giulia Marchi, Raymond Meeks, Sakiko Nomura, Sophy Rickett and innovative publishers’ projects from around Europe with a focus on Austria.

The works have been selected for their interesting approach to the idea of image and for the way this is articulated in the publication. They deal with aesthetical, sociological and political issues related to photography such as abs¬traction, image privacy and politics of representation. Through the concept, the choice of format, the treatment of images and their articulation via texts, these artists and publishers explore the many possibilities offered by publishing as an art form. The exhibition aims to give an overview of the dynamic artist’s books and publishing scene today.

A programme of events will explore different aspects of this burgeoning scene:

On the opening night, Friday 9 December at 7pm, Emanuele Camerini will take over part of the gallery to present his overall practice and his book Notes for a silent man in collaboration with the publisher Witty Kiwi.

On Tuesday 13th December at 7pm, Uruguayan artist Lalu Delbracio will present All Rise, a new performance piece conceived for the space of the gallery. Delbracio strips leaves of paper from the blank surface of the gallery wall, unveiling multiple layers of colour with each gesture. The piece interrogates the symbolic associations between the colour white and notions of purity; while exploring the tensions between homogeneity and diversity, civil disobedience and passivity. The performance will be accompanied by a text by artist Jessie Mc Laughlin written in response to the piece.
The performance is supported by Fedrigoni paper.

During the exhibition, archipelago’s curator will be available for advice sessions on developing, editing or / and distributing book projects.
